Just picked up a Smith 6906 PD trade in and it looks pretty good though the SA trigger seems to be pretty sloppy/loose in the take up. Is this normal? My 5906 is not like this. Someone said it may be the trigger play spring. Can I shoot it without this spring without causing issues?

That sounds like trigger play spring adjustment. You can try adjusting it and see what happens.

OTOH, the CHP 4006TSW guns had that spring removed and didn't seem to miss it.

Interesting. How do I adjust it? Either way it sounds like it’s at least not necessary then for function.

I gently pushed it forward some and it solved the “issue”. SA trigger is normal now.

Have another quick question regarding disassembly though. Per manual smith says when removing slide from frame the hammer will fall and that’s okay, just let it, but how is this a good idea? Not the same as pulling trigger with frame off I assume, which is not good I’ve read.

The trigger play spring is a bit of a weak spot in the S&W design. When it breaks, there is the potential for the separated piece to tie up the trigger. As I understand it, it was enough of a problem to make the California Highway Patrol order their 4006 pistols without the spring.
