6906 upgrades ?

Sorry if i am new to the fourm and don't have the correct placement of this topic. I am looking to uprade the 6906 i bought last year and wondered if they had a site or anything i could do for it?

Any particular upgrades? What condition is it in? What kind of sights does it have? What will you be using it for?

If it has been well used, I would just work on restoring it to like new condition, the best I could and not really do any modifications to it. Maybe get some new springs, refinish, new grips, etc. That's just my $.02

If it's already in excellent condition, I wouldn't do much to it, maybe new sights, laser grips or something like that.

Tritium sights are about all I can think of that would 'improve' the 6906. S&W really got it right, right out of the box, with this model!

can i get a tac rail or anything for it ?

its pretty damn clean and i would use it as just for fun and home defense till i get the other rifles ready. Wife has the .38 spc for her.

I asked this same question several years back regarding a 5903. The response I got was that, in general, simply bolting or otherwise attaching a light rail to a pistol's dust cover is not a good idea. The dust cover is subjected to some unique forces during the recoil cycle and unless it was designed from the get-go to support a light rail you run the serious risk of ending up with a cracked frame after a relatively low round count.

If you look closely at the 3rd Generation TSW models that were designed to support a light rail you'll see that the dust cover is substantially beefed up.

In the end I just bought a good tactical flashlight and practiced a hand hold technique.

While not a great option there are lasers you can mount to the trigger guard. The other few options are hogue grips and night sights. You can also use full size 59xx series magazines will fit in you 69 series pistol.

Thanks guys for your quick responces. I really enjoyed the information. I am starting my collection out small and hope to have more through out the years as time goes by too. Currently looking at getting home from iraq (currently on leave now) but picking up a m4 and maybe a tactical rem 870. I love military/police style weapons..

I'm looking forward to getting home from Iraq too. I should be home by Christmas. Just before I deployed was when I got bit by the S&W semi-auto bug. I bought two pistols in about a week. Then it got put on hold for a year. I have a 5906 and a 459. I'm looking for a compact model when I get back, maybe a 6906. Good luck and return home safe!

I carried a 669 for my last 14 years of the 28 I was a LEO, as a detective and uniform patrol. Those models are bulletproof. Never had a round that didn't fire, even after foot chases when it hit the ground, all kinds of weather, etc. A great reliable weapon. My 669 now rests in my safe in retirement, but I take her out often to clean her up and reminisce.

I now have some Glocks and recently bought an M&P .45. This week I'll qualify with my original duty weapon, a Smith Model 66, .357 and Glock 17 for my HR 218 card. You can't go wrong with any of them.

There is not a lot of room for improvement for either the 5906 or the 6906, or their blued brothers. Maybe Novak sights if they do not already have them. An action job might give a little more slickness, but they are pretty much unimprovable aas they come out of the box. One of the unsung heros of the 9mm family IMHO. Too bad the tupperware came along just as these guns reached perfection. I am keeping mine, they will only leave me via probate.

While I like the 6906, it's just too short for my big hands. I like the 5906 and 5903. They are a perfect fit for my hands, but have a longer barrel and slide than I would like. I finally have the perfect gun, the 5903SSV. It is the compilation of the best parts of both guns, the larger, light weight frame of the 5903 and the short slide of the 6904, hence the SSV (Short Slide Variation). The blue slide and aluminum frame make a great contrast, too.

You two have a safe deployment. My oldest son is in Iraq for his 3rd tour and I just missed him there this year as I moved Astan. I've owned two 6906s before and currently have a 6904. Mine has the old style 2nd Gen sights that I want to change out for Novaks. Have you found yourself a real good holster and belt yet?

A little preventative medicine and lots nutrition are all these guns need.

Clean them once in a while, change the springs now and then and feed them lots and lots of ammunition.

Good ammo if you have it, but if you don't the Smith will eat anything you feed it.

In my opinion, the only upgrades you might need for a 6906 are sights that might be more suitable for your intended use. Some folks go for polishing them mirror bright, compensators, shoulder stocks, bipods, curb feelers and dangling fuzzy dice. There is no need of any of that bling, the 6906 has an endearing look just 'as is'.
