West Virginia Eighth Grade Student Arrested Charged and Suspended Over NRA Gun T Shirtnra tshirt_2

Conflict over Jared Marcum's shirt got him arrested and suspended from school.

...

Police confirmed that Marcum had been arrested and faced charges of obstruction and disturbing the education process after getting into an argument over the shirt with a teacher at Logan Middle School, which is south of Charleston.

...

Logan Middle School's policy regarding dress states:

A student will not dress or groom in a manner that disrupts the educational process or is detrimental to the health, safety or welfare of others. A student will not dress in a manner that is distractive or indecent, to the extent that it interferes with the teaching and learning process, including wearing any apparel that displays or promotes any drug-, alcohol- or tobacco-related product that is prohibited in school buildings, on school grounds, in school-leased or owned vehicles, and at all school-affiliated functions.

OMG!!!!!!! The next thing you know he'll be eating a pop tart into the shape of a gun, or pointing his finger at someone traumatizing them in a horrendous manner, scarring them for life! Will the horror of these Hello Kitty and NRA T-Shirts never cease scarring our children for life. I shudder at the thought!!

This just cries out for a class action lawsuit, inc. a civil rights lawsuit against anyone involved.

Anti-gun educators are a major threat to the nation. They usually lean to the left on most issues.
I had a college prof who I think was a closet communist.

Good Lord! Are we ever going to regain control of this out of control society? Someone needs to be slapped "up side the head" with a common sense stick!

Makes me sick to my stomach.

The arrest makes me wonder though if there was any physical violence that led to the arrest, something that hasn't been brought up yet. Still... the shirt itself shouldn't have been a problem to begin with. God help the failing educational system. :(

Sounds like the kid "failed the attitude test". I guess it is OK to wear a shirt with a condom on it, but self defense is controversial even in W VA. The Kid should have known better.

For some reason it's also ok to wear a Malcolm X, or an image of a foreign dictator.

I was a public school teacher in NYS so I can understand some parts of this story, but not all. Technically, any garment that displays a firearm image will most probably be deemed as inappropriate by a school district. It means nothing if it is an NRA shirt, or one that promotes gangster rap music. If you know how schools operate, you can steer clear of causing a problem with admins and staff by simply not wearing any article of clothing with potentially offensive imagery.

That said, we know who school districts employ, and we know what side of the 2A argument that faction believes in. There's a fine line between trying to exercise one's 1A rights about one's 2A rights and fighting a losing battle with City Hall. You wear a NRA shirt to school, expect to get hassled.

Now as far as anything more than asking the student to change his shirt, the school's actions are ridiculous. Rules about dress code in public schools are generally universal ... a warning and request to change said garment to something more in line with school policy. Arrests and suspensions? Ridiculous, unless the article of clothing was so egregiously offensive, or represented an act of hate crime.

When I was teaching, 99% of clothing violations came from girls wearing skirts deemed too short, and boys wearing pants drooped down gangster style. Always a warning to the student, and a request to change. If Springtime was warm, the girls usually rebelled a bit and started refusing to change. Big deal.

And speaking from a Conservative teacher's perspective, the corruption and incompetence existing in the nation's public school system is the primary problem that needs to be focused on, not the enforcement of dress codes.
