Everyone is aware that there is a federal excise tax on guns and ammo, right? Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act explained - Wildlife for All
Actually, the Firearms and Ammunition Excise Tax (FAET) has been around since 1919, when it was intended to defray the expenses of WW I. As BE Mike pointed out above, the 1937 Pittman-Robertson Act redirected those revenues to wildlife restoration, where they remain to this day. Most of us are unaware of this tax because it is collected from the original manufacturer of the product, not the consumer, so it is built in to both the wholesale and retail prices. We should all be aware that legislation has been proposed to repeal this tax and also to greatly increase it. I think neither of these is a real possibility at this time.
