I had ordered from Graf and sons 9 mm ultra brass. At the time I was under the impression I could use it to reload for my 9 x18 mm Makarov handgun. However, it appears that this is the wrong brass for this gun-am I correct? even though the 9 mm ultra was listed as 9 x 18. Can I reload the 9 mm ultra brass for the 9x18 Makarov? Lesson learned is to check and recheck before ordering the wrong item!

There is 9x18 mm Ultra and 9x18 mm Makarov. The two are not the same. The Wiki link didn't work for me, but the Ultra uses 0.355 in bullets, the Mak uses 0.365 in bullets. So no, you can't use Ultra brass to load Makarov ammo.

The Ultra was developed as a possible police round and pretty much was a failure.

Appreciate everyone's responses. Lesson learned-as I had stated, one cannot be too careful whenever it comes to reloading, no matter where one is in the process: so even the ordering of supplies must be perfect. I think I will sell the ultra 9 x 18 mm

I regularly trim 9x19 casings to use in my 9x18 Makarov. The Lee 9x18 Mak reloading dies do a great job transforming the .356 diameter to .365. In fact I loaded up a batch this morning. Lee sells an inexpensive trimmer for this purpose.

Ditto. Unless the Ultra case head/rim is drastically different than the 9x19, it should easily convert.

The 9×18mm Makarov and the 9x19mm Para/Luger are very different cartridges. If not you can try to trade off the brass you bought for the brass you need. We all make mistakes, luckily this won't cost you much to fix.

Got a friend back east that I taught to reload.Probably the only persons reloads I absolutely trust to shoot in my own guns. Anyway he could not get 9 Makarov brass so he trimmed down 2000 rounds of 9 Luger brass and has been happily shooting it in his Makarov. He has another friend back there that is a semi pro bullet caster(one man business) that he has bought all the 9 Makarov bullets from. I have shot that Makarov(and ammo) and it is surprisingly accurate. Is the 9 Ultra the same base size as the 9 Luger/380? Actually the 380 case is a miniature 45 auto and is a straight case where the 9 Luger isn't... so if the Ultra is as the 380 it may be an even better case to use. BTW he uses a stamp pad to mark all the shortened brass so he doesn't get any mixed up and only loads it twice.
