Hey, I haven't posted much around here but am always lurking! I enjoy reading the threads here and thought you all would be a good group to ask a question. A coworker of mine will turn 90 years old in July. He has decided to retire for good the 1st of may. Great guy and he will be missed! But our group of guys at work would like to get him a gift, maybe a knife? Any suggestions to a good knife for a gift. Something to remember us by and show our gratitude to all he has done around the shop. Thanks for any suggestions!

That's my kinda guy, working until he's 90.
Everybody needs a good pocket knife. Get a nice Buck knife or a Spyderco Delica. My Delica is my constant companion.

Queen Cutlery makes some very nice pocketknives with D2 steel and bone stag scales. If he's about to be 90 he grew up when nearly all men and boys, and many women and girls, carried pocketknives. My dad did till he died at 90, and I do to this day myself.

Case and Moore Maker knives are also good, but I'd suggest a traditional pattern--stockman, two-blade jack, muskrat, etc.

He most likely has a favorite pocket knife he has carried forever. However a Buck 110 would be a great addition. At age 75 I still carry my Uncle Henry pocket knife along with my Buck 110 on my belt along with my 28-2 357 revolver.

I say search the internet and find a jack knife that was made 50/60/70 years ago, even if it is used and in good condition. I think he would love that rather than something produced today, I know I would.

+1 . . . Perfect choice! Note the "Made in USA" on the blade

I don't know, maybe it's me, but if I worked until I was 90 and all anyone could come up with for a retirement gift was a knife I might use it to slit my wrists.

How about a trip, a weekend getaway or something, a simple camera, dinner at a really nice restaurant, a Russian bride. I don't know, something fun. A knife sounds too much like a watch or a Father's Day tie. My dad is 90 and if I gave him a knife sometimes his hand shakes so bad he'd perforate anything within 5 feet of him. ;)

Get a move on it so you can get it inscribed (personalized) . :)

Maybe his name and years of service ?

I also like the US made traditional blades. Just make sure you get one that he can open. It's harder to open knives as you get older.
Don't ask me how I know!

My idea would be a medium small fairly straight bladed knife (that he can leave out on his desk and use for a letter opener), with some engraving as to who from and why. "Your co-workers who will miss you, etc.". Something that he will use and see often. I agree, at 90 he has one or more favorite pocket-knives he will continue to use.

A 90 year old doesn't need any knife that's heavy or hard to open.

The one-handed openers like the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn series or the Spyderco knives make sense, as do the Benchmade one-handed knives.

I don't know where you live or the knife laws, so can only be very general.

Fallkniven makes some beautiful folders, but they may be a little steep for your budget. These include some pretty exotic handle materials. Their basic U-2 is a good little knife that's not hard to open. I think the handle is Zytel. It's very light and handy. It is also exccedingly sharp, so I hope he still has good coordination.

The man is working til he's ninety! Must be in decent shape.
You're painting with a rather broad brush.
Once you get fixed on something like Fallkniven, The Lost World, Outback Steakhouse that's all we hear from you. Open up your mind a bit!
