I've always liked the nice single action trigger and 45 ACP caliber of a 1911, but never been very comfortable with the grip shape. It's too narrow and slim for my hands.

Given that, would a 945 be a good alternative to look at? I've never handled one myself.

The 945 has a straighter grip than the 1911. The front of the grip frame is flat not rounded as well. This makes the gun point more naturally for me and is more comfortable. On the 1911 I like to use a full wrap Pachmayr grip so the rounded front is less noticable.
My 945 is one gun that I will never regret buying . You do get what you pay for and for the price, it has everything you need.
Here's my 945 with its cousin a first generation 745.

As suggested by Bruce try out the wrap around Pachmayr rubber grips. They will make the 1911 grip a bit fatter. Also try an arched mainspring housing if your gun has a flat one now. The MSH change will make a huge difference.

As far as the 945 goes I have both and I find that the grip feels skinnier compared to any of my 1911s regardless of the grips. But all my 1911s have arched MSHs. Despite the skinny feel it points just right for me.

I have several Smith pistols and revolvers, as well as other brands of 1911's, and I can honestly say that the 945 would be the very last weapon I would dispose of. Extremely accurate and reliable. I have fairly large hands and it fits me perfectly. Very comfortable to shoot. Worth the $.

945

I purchased my 945 before price hikes. It was $1050 new plus Ohio
Sales Tax. I fired it and became familiar with it. When my son returned from Kosovo duty, I gave it to him.

The 945 takes down like all SW Gen 3 semi autos.

I would buy another if I got the opportunity. It is not a true 1911 and I have two excellent 1911s in full size and one in Commander size.

It is far cheaper to look for fatter 1911 grips than to buy a 945.

MSRP is getting a bit heroic on a 945, might look for a used one if I go ahead with it.

Nill Grips

I wasn't satisfied with the shape of the grips on my 945 and was
fortunate enough to run across a set offered on GB by a seller who
was 'getting out of the buisness' and offering the grips at a price
much less than normal for Nills..
Bought'em.Put'em on.Lov'em.
They have a thicker or flared area near the lower half which
resembles the classic 'coke shape' so coveted on S&W rev.
Friends who handle the pistol with the Nills installed usually
make mention of 'how good it feels'......
Buying a set to try out from an online supplier would be a bit pricey but could probably
be resold to save most or all of the cost of the trial..
"Give it a Shot"..!
