I recently purchased a new 986+ Pro Series 5" to shoot at my local club steel plate matches. I bought brand new Starline nickel cases but found that they backed out and jammed the cylinder....DANG! I figured it was because of the slickness of the nickel and the taper of the 9mm so I traded them back for brass cases, thinking they would grab the chamber better. I loaded more and went back to the range with the same load, 4.5g Ramshot Silhouette 124g RN X-Treme plated bullet @ 1.060 oal. They backed out and jammed the cylinder too....double DANG! I friend at the range I compete with handed me some Federal factory 115g and they grabbed and did NOT jam the cylinder....No DANG! I have many different types of powders and my Silhouette is getting real low, so what are some of your loads that allow the case to expand enough to grab the chamber and eliminate the case backing out, or does anyone think I should use a different case. I didn't really want to shoot a 9mm revolver at full power specs. I like the mild loads since my wrists are getting more tender as I age. It kind of a bummer because I never considered this to be an issue before I bought it. As always, thank you all in advance, and any help is greatly appreciated.

A bunch of the competitors complained about Starline brass in their 929's, with your complaints. Most seem to use Winchester brass with good success. There's a lot of info on 9mm Starline on Brian Enos's website under revolver.

How do they back out with moon clips?

If you meant the "bullets" backed out, then the problem is the neck tension, ie sizing die of your loading setup. You dont need to be taper crimping like you would for an auto.

The cases are backing out, not the bullets. Does not take much but they do lock the cylinder up and it sure moves, even with the moon clips. I started another post in the reloading section called "Head Scratchin' Revolver 9mm Load Issue" it's really picking up steam with great input. It seems like your idea about neck tension has been brought up but for the case moving also.....interesting stuff.

Dunno if this'll help ......but i was demooning 150 rounds a little while ago of 9mm for my 929. Although its not a 986, it does have a titanium cylinder. I think i read a bit of that last other post. The OAL i thought was curious. But i think i read it was a 124gr used.
I use xtreme plated 9mm 115gr. RN .43 disk bullseye @ 4g. 1.124". I dont even crimp them hard. If i pull the bullets i make apart, there's a slight line at the crimp. Mixed brass. Not a strong load but it also works on some autos i have so sometimes i choose a "happy medium" for both autos and Revolvers. I stick to bullseye and titegroup for 9s but i recently got a hold of some hp38- so im going to be experimenting soon.
Hope this helps.
Oh and ive got 1500 rounds on the same batch of old 9s on that 929! I recently got a hold of 500 Winchester shells to swap em out. I cracked a few now.
