Been shooting my 625-3.
The new 986 looks interesting.
Anybody using it for ICORE yet?

I would expect some will use it in ICORE at the club level. It will be hard to compete against all the 627 8-shooters though. ICORE is "six-round friendly" but the 8-shooters are still a big advantage; especially for making up misses.

Time will tell.

I used a 7 shot for a few years. It's only utility was a make up shot on missed steel. It was a very rare scenario that gave it an advantage on paper. I upgraded to the 8 shot and have found it to be much better for the game.

I have an 8-shot, its a 327 TRR8. Never tried it on ICORE.
Might work for ICORE, but will have to mess with Short Colt for easy reloads.
Attraction of the 986 is 9mm plus more robust moons.
8 shots would be nice on the spinning wheel of plates, however!

I submit that buying a new revolver to save on the cost of brass and moons is false economy. ;)

If I was spending money it would be on a 929 instead...

I shoot a 627 with .38 special brass trimmed to .900" that loads and ejects pretty well but accuracy has been an ongoing issue. For everything BUT run and gun games it gets shot with 38 special loads. My 625 has been pretty much retired except for bowling pins when the rules are favorable...

The 986 seems like an orphan looking for a home.

We have one shooter looking at one. He has consolidated to a single centerfire caliber, 9mm. He has been put off by the price tag on the 986 so far however.

Our ICORE matchs are not the normal at Big Piney. We have a much larger number of Classic/SSR shooters, than Moon Clip shooters. And almost never an open revolver.

I would think a 986 would have an advantage over a moon clip 686 shooting 38 Special. Shorter ammunition should have a very slight edge. Accuracy could be an issue to consider.

My brother is thinking hard about having his Willy Clapp 3" GP100 & SP101 both moon clipped. He shoots both in our ICORE Matchs. We have a Club BUG Division for his SP101 to play in.
