My 986 has developed the dreaded light strike syndrome.
Steel challenge gun. About 2K 135g light loads through it.
Going to check everything. Endshake first.
I measure .007" max to .002" minimum.
Can't find a published specification for this.
Maybe add one shim?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks.

Check your firing pin. Make sure the FP channel is clean. Check your strain screw, make sure it's tight.

A shim won't hurt. Give it a try.

I am getting mine back from S&W next week. Took about 8 weeks. Same issue. The strain screw was loose but tightening did not help. The ammo was Armscor. My suspicion was a broken firing pin spring. Will let you know what they found.
