Got to test a few loads yesterday......
one of the pistols was a 4" 9mm XD9 that I needed for my test.

Got all set up and let the first five maximum 115grs fly across
the screen. First two .... errors !!
Checked the battery, wire connections, all looked good.....
fired the last three and ALL...... errors.

I am not saying that I am getting old and might need to hang it up......
but someone had the darn unit pointed BACKWARDS !!
So much for the 115gr NATO test load.

the two 124gr plated turned out much better..... even had numbers on the screen.:D

I was surprised at the high fps in the two loads but after testing
a little 3" 9mm for over six months, there really is a difference .

5.8grs of Unique kicked out an average of 1207 fps.
7.0grs of SR 4756 powder was smoking at 1255 fps.

Enough pencil and paper work...........
time to relax and just put pills down range and leave all the gear home.
Just gun, ammo and muffs should work from here on out.

Good shooting to all.

Wow, those are smokin'

I tested the new CFE Pistol powder in 9mm and I really like it. I did not get quite the velocity you did, but over 1,100 with 124 GR Berry's plated. My test barrel was 3.9" long.

I also tested the CFE Pistol in 45 ACP but was not too impressed with it there.

5.8grs of Unique in a 9mm case?!?! How did you get the bullet in? That is one hot load. I've loaded 5.0grs of Unique with my cast 130gr RNFP, and those are pretty darn full.

Why do you find this odd? Alliant shows 5.8/Uniq. in the manual for the 124 Gold Dot HP.

I'll tell you a story. I have a Walther P-1 that was like new when I bought it. Started out with Unique and 124 FMJ and at 5.8 gr. was still getting under-recoiling! Kept going until the gun finally functioned properly, it took 6.2 gr/Unique! Chronographs at 1242 FPS, same as the H.P.White got testing German military 9mm after WWII, in a Walther P-38. If you don't know the P-1 is a post WWII P-38 with an aluminum alloy frame.

I just remember the cases being very full with 5.0 grs of Unique, and wondering about putting another 20% more powder in them. Would be a pain loading them with a progressive, and powder spills.

Unfortunately your memory is flawed, even the 6.2 gr. does not fill the case. It leaves probably 3/32" or so, and bullets for 9mm don't seat very deep when loaded full length. There is some compression, but not excessive.

9mm and Unique

Back in the 70's I routinely loaded 7 gr's of Unique in the 9mm with a 90 gr JHP on top and 8 gr of Herco with the same bullet....the Unique load clocked around 1400 fps and the Herco normally around 1450 fps.....these loads came out of the now infamous Speer #8 loading manual. I shot hundreds of these thru a model 59 & a Browning hi power....they were accurate and literally blew up those 90 gr JHP's in wet paper pulp.

SR4756 is my powder for 9mm. With a Beretta 92,I've gotten the following.
88-90 JHP 7.0-1350fps 8.0-1500fps
115 JHP 6.0-1100fps 6.75-1200fps

When loading for the 3" 9mm this last month........
with "My" cases, 6.1 grs of Unique was almost a compressed load and 6.3grs was a compressed load with my 115gr plated RN (FMJ) type bullet at a 1.12" OAL.

5.8grs of Unique with the 124gr plated RN bullet at 1.14" OAL was almost a compressed load. 6.0grs was compressed and had a larger ES and the group also added .95" to the target.
In this case the Lyman data worked out better than the higher Speer #8 data in the short barrel.
