I have run moon clips for years with 25, 625s 610 and 627. I now have a 929 that is a pain to get them on and off. I'm wondering if anyone has found any tricks like the 38/357 .025 clips work best with Federal and Remington.
The BMT for my 627 is wonderful, the BMT for the 929 works like...well you know.
Any help would be great.

To load a moon clip use a small set of channel lock [water pump] pliers.
Put one jaw in the hole in the middle and the case under the other.
Adj as needed.
Ps ..some will take a dremmel and cut a groove in the bottom jaw
to hold the clip but I dont.
To unload, get a piece of pipe a little larger than the case and cut a shelf [tab]
in one end a little less than 1/2 the way around.
Slide over the case and put the shelf [tab] against the clip, then twist like
a screw driver. [can be made from old golf club shaft from yard sale]
If tube is long enough, the cases can be held in it and when full
dumped into bucket, etc.
I have used this trick for years.

You need to match the moonclips to the brand of brass. I would call TK Custom (or the maker of your moon clips if different) to see what brass matches what moon clips. Once you get the brass to clip fit correct, they will work fine with the BMT mooner (my favorite).

I do that with a 1/2 inch copper pipe for the 45s. Works great, I got the BMT when I bought the 929 used. Now I want to use it.

He's right on all accounts. Not all brass and moonclips play well together. My 986 likes TK moonclips and Federal Brass.

I tried other brands of moonclips and pickup brass and it didn't work well at all.

The BMT mooner is also my favorite.

Unlike the 45acp, the 9mm varies in weight, length ,thickness, and groove
sizes all over he place.
Don't know why, maybe cause it is european and there are many types/versions.
Where as 45acp is like fixed in stone...

I use Ranch products and Speed beez. WWB load with just your fingers. I recently loaded some Blazer stuff that was on sale. Those loaded fine too. Haven't shot them yet. Dont ask how they do.
My 929 and 986 do with WWB fine. And reload with Winchester cases as my preference.
4 or 5 years ago?, I purchased some 9mm range brass from a friend who picks up brass "as a buisness". He sold me a thousand mixed range brass that I loaded so much, the primer pockets became unreliable. On his 44 special cases I reuse until I split the cases.
IME, Ranch or Speed beez have worked out good. They load most about anything. And my moonclip loader will ever be my finger digits up to a 45 acp.
For the 45s I like Wilson combat steel clips. My preference is steel for moonclips. None of this plastic stuff I've been hearing about.

Sent from my new old phone that finally works again...

Remington brass is a lot different than the rest. As 9mm was not intended for revolvers the extractor groove does not have a set spec size.
I had 9K new 9 mm brass and TK Custom had exactly the right size moon clips that they had in stock for 8 shot .38 super.

Sounds like you are the perfect candidate for these...

RIMZ 929.. 9 mm

I did a T&E on these clips and found them to work with a wide variety of brass and best of all, held any brand rigidly. This is because the clip is stepped and completely surrounds the case head. Holds rounds firmly enough for competitive purposes and are less expensive than most metal clips. And, of course, no tools needed.

Don't extrapolate this info and think it applies to all calibers, but for the 9 mm in the 929, these are the nutz.

Good luck in your quest.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

For 9mm J-frames:
I get pill bottles from Walmart (for free) that are the perfect size for holding three 5-round moonclips. I put the first moonclip in the bottle primer up, the second primer down, and the third primer up (no bullet noses touching primers). The fit is snug, a slight tap of the bottle on your hand drops a moon clip into your palm.

I would think that these free bottles could be cut off short to hold a single moonclip with round snouts exposed. I will try that.

Edit -- I tried it, it works.
Also, cut a circular hole in the bottom of the pill bottle with a diameter just less than the location of the primers. The purpose being to assist in pushing the moon clip out with a finger (if need be) while still protecting the encapsulated primers from being struck by something in your pocket.

Give the pill bottle base a slight twist as you extract it after you drop the rounds into the cylinder. That assists in releasing the bottle base from the moonclip.
