Trying to find information about shooting 124gr +p hollow points in a SW 439. Will the gun handle it? Have a bunch and would like to use it.

I agree with ArchAngel. Use it for carry ammo, but don't shoot more of it thru the pistol than necessary to be sure it will run in that gun. It will be harder on the gun and, like the man says, replacement of it is an issue right now.

It should be fine on a limited basis if your recoil spring is fresh, and you change it more frequently. Like every 3K rounds instead of 5K. I too have a 439.

Now, that being said, modern SD hollow points don't need to be +P to expand properly. I do have a bunch of +P 9mm rounds, but I'd use them in a 5906 or my HK USP 9 with its double recoils spring. If you really really feel the need for more power, get a .40 or something in .357 SIG. (or a 10mm)

Having more than just a few years experience with S&W 9mm pistols, I can say that they will withstand +P ammo. I do not recommend a steady diet of +P ammo with aluminum receiver pistols, but they won't self-destruct either.

Personally, with the advent of modern bullets like Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, and Winchester Ranger T, I quit using +P ammo and I come from the era of 115 grain +P and +P+ JHP being required for good bullet performance. Modern bullets are really good without being driven to screaming velocity.

Todays 124 gr +P ammo has a WIDE range of fps speeds form all the various ammo makers, as well as pressures of their loads.

Bullet make up plays a large part on the fps, be it a all Copper bullet, a heavy wall copper jacket or the "plated" type JHP for one company, that ALL require a different fps to expand correctly.

If you get a chance, look up the loads on Luck Gunner, to see what I am talking about.

Lots of ammo to choose from, and see what your ammo is like.

Bullet placement is everything.
As Jeff Cooper said:”A twenty two short through the tear duct is more effective than a forty four magnum through the arm.
+P isn’t necessary if you can place your shot properly. IMHO.

Im gonna concur with everyone else here, it wont hurt the gun unless you fire thousands of +P rounds through it however, I wouldnt be using defensive +P ammo just to shoot.

It will continue to be harder to find for the foreseeable future unfortunately.
