My new 9mm shield when it chambers the last round in the mag the mag follower slides over the slide stop pushing the mag into the trigger bar causing it to miss the sear. You can drop the mag and it will fire. This has rounded the edge of the mag follower of both mags so when ordering new mags I was told this is a common problem with 9mm shields. I put the mags into my 40 Shield frame and it does the same thing so i'm thinking it has to be a problem with the mags. Can someone help me please?

Does it do this with the other mag?

Mine doesn't do it. I have seen posts about the slide lock slipping past the follower, but not enough to disconnect the sear. It just doesn't lock the slide back on the last round.

I would contact S&W support.

Yes it does this with both mags.

It was working fine with the 8 round mag until it messed up. When it messed up it rounded the edge of the follower and just keep getting worst till it fails all the time. Was hoping that would not have to send back to S&W but may have no choice. Thanks

Post a picture of the followers. Take the slide off, insert the mag so we can see how much of the lock tab engages the follower.

Thanks for your help Saudade but while reading another post were he had a case separation causing a crack in the frame from the trigger to the mag release I checked my Shield closer and found a hairline crack in the same place. I had a shoulder blow out of a case in mine and I guess it took a while to start messing up. Don't know what they will do but going to send it back to Smith for repair. Sad day.

Hope it wasn't a reload, and that you still have that casing. It could become a "discussion" of blame between Smith and the ammo mfg.

Well, I'm sorry to hear that. Hope you weren't injured. Seems like a few .40s have gone "kaboom".

If you search on "shield .40 kaboom" you'll find others with the same problem.

Good Luck!

It was one of my reloads. It was loaded with 3.9 gr. bullseye with a 124 gr. bullet. I have been reloading for over 35 years without ever having the shoulder blowing out like this. The primer showed no sign of over pressure and I really do not think it was over charged. Thinking might have had a bad piece of brass with a weak shoulder. It says in the manual not to use reloads so I'm sure I'll be paying for repairs if they fix it. Sad day

I had a problem today with my .40 Shield that sounded very similar to the one described in this thread. We determined that the trigger draw bar was pushing to the side intermittently, causing the problem, but couldn't see anything that might cause it. After reading this thread, I checked and found the same hairline crack described here. I'll be calling S&W tomorrow.

I'm curious to find out what kind of resolution the original poster had.
