OK. So I was at my local Wally World and stopped by the sporting goods dept. to check out any ammo deals. Hoping to find some low cost 9mm for my new 6909. They had 100 ct.
Win. White Box 'Made in USA' Value packs for $26 and change.
Not bad I thought, and I'd rather shoot USA made brass cased
stuff vs. the steel cased import stuff. Got home and was looking at the stuff and was not too impressed. Check out the attached photos. Numerous rounds with dented primers and the crimps are quite inconsistent. Looks like some have a roll crimp while others are taper crimped. What the heck? Not holding out much hope for accuracy based on the crimps being so inconsistent. This was my first box of the stuff and will be my last. If I'm gonna' pay for factory ammo, it needs to be better than this. On the bright side, If my gun can manage to choke down this stuff it will be good to go with quality ammo.
Winchester should be ashamed to put their name on this stuff.

The wally world you mention is being fed thru my guns. From brownings to m&p without issue. 2K round count and no problems...
 
It may very well be functional ammo, but it does not inspire confidence when WINCHESTER can't manage to seat a primer without denting it or seem to get the crimps uniform. I have also seen reports of the stuff showing up without flash holes punched. I realize this isn't premium ammo but I would think a large company like OLIN/Winchester would want to make a better impression to their customers.

Well, have you e-mailed or called them? I stated above the ammo in your pics is out of spec. But I'm not convinced it came from Winchester. Contact them and share their response with us.

What "reports" on flash holes not punched can you share with us?
 
I will get my lot number and fill out the form at Winchester. I'll let everyone know what they say.
 
I just think they're pushing the ammo out too fast. The dents in the primer look like what happens when I get a flake of W231 on the primer die. I looked at a few rounds from an old box of WWB that I have (I mostly(no, exclusively) shoot my own handloads but I have a few thousand rounds of various factory loads still around, and I noticed quite a few of the primers have marks on them that look like debris was on the die when the primer was inserted, none had the "perfect circle" marks like yours but I only looked at 20 or so rounds. I'd be more concerned about the weird (for an auto) crimps and the skewed bullets. I agree, contact Winchester.
 
I have used many thousand WWB's in 9mm. Never noticed that sort of problem, but them I wasn't looking for it. It actually has been the best "cheap" ammo I have used in my old Walther. You're right, though that does not scream quality.
 
Are you sure those are factory firsts? If so are you sure they are made in the USA. There are 2 different Winchester White Box ammos. One is Winchester USA and the other doesn't say USA on the box and are not made here.
 
I bought WW 9mm white box 100 rd multipaks about a couple of months ago at Academy and none of the looked like this but in fact had crimped primers. I reload and looked at the headstamp and it said WW with a coded date for 2013 instead of 9mm identification. I looked it up and WW says they are using NATO brass with crimped primers. There was a thread a couple of months ago on the forum about it. Really no problem to ream the primer pocket to reload. The WW white box 115 gr fmj shoots great in my 6906 and in my 9c.
 
We buy WW white box because it's cheap. They could crank down on the QA, but then the ammo wouldn't be as cheap.

The ammo shown by the OP will safely go bang and make holes in the target. That's about all most of us expect. If I want perfect, accurate, and cost be darned ammunition, I'll shoot my handloads.
 
I absolutely curse Winchester 22lr ammo, but the WWB centerfire I've had has always functioned perfectly. The cases always look clean and bright and the bullets are much less nicked and marred than a lot of other range ammo. I'm not doubting that they may have made some junky ammo, but I haven't seen any.
 
Win. loaded up their eqpmt. on railroad cars and moved from IL to MS in Oct. 2010 after they screwed over the union. Enjoy their new ammo made at minimum wage. Pay peanuts & you get monkeys.

Same here. I have several boxes WWB and all ammo looks good. Ive also fired a good many through my Walther-not one problem ever.

Exactly. Won't work too well, which is a big reason to let Winchester handle it.

I have seen the WCC12 military crimped brass and it also works just fine. I'm also able to prime those cases with the Lee hand primer without swaging or otherwise removing the crimp. It's not nearly as much of a crimp as you encounter on 5.56 brass.

I've got 3 different lots of WWB on hand including one WCC12 lot and I am going to chrono them soon.
 
My guess is that the dimples in the primers were tool marks placed in the cup when forming the metal before the primer was manufactured. The crimp is inconsistent but not overly so, for cheap ammo. If it were mine, I'd run it and see if it put holes where I wanted before I said anything. Then again, I've learned not to expect too much from commercial manufacturing. Keeps me from being disappointed...
 
My last time at the range I found an incomplete round in WWB that consisted of the brass shell and primer with no powder or bullet. I have never seen that before in a box of factory ammo. I was about halfway through the 100 round value pack when I found it. All of the other ammo in that box seemed fine and I shot all of it that day.
 
I won't buy the WWB anymore I've had more issues with it than any of the "imported" or "cheap" or whatever you want to call it.
I shot my S&W 4046 this past weekend and had 3 FTF on WWB rounds that day.
First time ever had that with that gun. Shot budget brand ultra max and others that day with no issues.
So when I run through the WWB I have I won't be purchasing any further boxes. I'll stick to the cheap stuff that works EVERYTIME.
 
I've never had a WWB round not fire but I have had 2 failures with Federal WB, they both had the primers in backwards. Now the only time I use "store bought" ammo is when a match requires it (which doesn't happen very often, maybe a couple of times a year)

Exactly what I intend to do going forward. I foolishly sold my die set for 9mm years ago, when I lost interest in small caliber HG's and was doing the 'hand cannon' stuff i.e. SKS calibers and SuperMag stuff. When I had a 9mm years ago the Winchester USA 9mm 115gr Ball ammo was the most accurate factory load for my gun. So when I recently picked up my 6906 I decided to grab some quick ammo to try her out. The WWB was my first choice based on my prior experience with the load.
I was disappointed as to the apparent lack of quality control in what I saw. I'm not to worried about it however and the empties will make very nice reloads!

If I had more than 500 brass and 2k bullets I would die and go to heaven !!
 
Where are you guys getting bullets that you can load a completed 9mm round for 12 cents??

And what type of bullets are they?

Rocky Mountain Reloading. 9mm 115gr RN plated. $.072 to $.077 per bullet depending on quantity ordered. RMR Bullets, $.03 for a primer and about $.01 for powder.
 
Winchester and Federal 9mm target ammo from WM keeps me in cheap (relatively speaking!) ammo. Never had a problem with WWB.
