A $4000. model 625?

If it's one of us, just excuse me. But a 3" 625 in 45 Colt is selling
for $$4000. on a popular auction site and the auction has not even ended yet.

Edited to add; Now I remember, it was DHart who lost his son in Afghanistan last
year and announced back in June that he would be selling a few of his prized guns
due to economic hard times. This is one of his auctions. Heck, if I had mad cash I might be bidding.
Maybe the bidders know this and are being generous because of it.
Either way it IS a darn nice gun and in my favorite caliber.

Anyway, he has not been on the board in a while and I can only say I hope he
and his family are doing well.

I saw the same thing--been trying to find a 625-2 in 4" for a long time but pricing is out of my league. When I saw that auction I figured I missed something so I looked it over again and again--then I thought it was a typo ( pricing) --if that's the way they are going I'm going to get another 25-2 beater, have it cut down, send it to Ford's and I'll still be $2500.00 ahead.

Maybe Elvis is selling of some of his guns. The guy hasn't been making any new music in a while so maybe even he is feeling the recession. I'm just glad I found one for $500 out the door. If that is what they are going for then I got in while the getting was good.

EDIT: It says "Premium Hardwood Stocks" but I'm pretty sure that is the same Altamont laminate rosewood grip that I have. Also, those are MIM parts for the hammer and trigger are they not??? And the 625-4 and above had the redone extractor design. I do like the black powder cut cylinder. Maybe they were pretty limited in the .45 Colt chambering. Mine is .45 ACP and I prefer it that way. Much cheaper brass, save some powder, and can be loaded as hot as I would feed a 625. Which is why I love reading comments on the .45 Colt saying how it can be loaded up to magnum status... Maybe in a Ruger revolver or a rifle... I wouldn't do such a thing in ANY 25 or 625...

For that kind of money I was expecting lots on engraving, some gold inlays and ivory grips and a letter stating it was made for someone special, not a bone stock, scuffed up, dirty, 12 year old revolver, that needs to be re-crowned.

Wow, and I felt bad when I paid $850 for my 625-7 3". If I didn't like the pistol so much, I would lowball it and triple my money

It being in 45 LC probably makes it a little more scarce than the 45 acp version. If the 200 number is correct, that would make one a little hard to find. The price is still nuts. I guess if one was very well to do, and really wanted one to round out a collection. One might have gray hair waiting for another 3" 625 in 45LC to surface for sale.

I think I would have started on this Forum looking for one myself. One might be located not owned by a collector that could be had much cheaper.

I hope all is well with DHART, and that his family has found peace.
He is the absolute master when it comes to posting pictures, and has one of the best collections I've ever seen, especially pertaining to 3" revolvers.
A 3" 625 just sold on a site for 1000.

As mentioned, it appears this gun has come from the collection of DHart. He provided us with outstanding pictures for a long time but has been absent from the forum of late! He had a run of bad luck and I hope this is not the reason for the auction. The bidding has been by two bidders ONLY! Also, one of the bidders is bidding on a 3" mod 610, also a very limited run of guns, and this auction is reaching a ridiculous price! Are these people with more money than common sense?

Well I just found a 625-3 3 inch 45acp for 850 on one ofthe major sites for 875 buy it now. Did not think the price was bad Considering it looked in good shape though it did not have the box. Maybe I'll end up sending it back to smith to have a 45lc cylinder installed since I would never pay what that one is going for.

Hello to my friends here... and thanks to those of you with kind words to say.

I had not expected the bidding to go as it did... I am as flabbergasted as anyone else over this. But both fellows who were bidding are good, solid, serious-minded people who appreciate this gun, which is one of only 200, and have the means to make it theirs. It just so happened that both of these fellows wanted this particular gun very much. And I only had one to sell. The winning bidder is a great guy who has been very intently building his collection of great S&W revolvers. He bought another of my S&W's last year and bid generously to make it his. I very much appreciate his generous support.

As for the characterization of it be a "scuffed up, dirty, 12-year old revolver than needs to be recrowned", that is in the eyes of the beholder. In truth, this is a sweet and very hard to find S&W revolver, especially in this caliber and barrel length, that is in truly excellent condition. While is may not be some people's cup of tea, it's a gun that a lot of folks would be especially pleased to own.

Anyhow... yes, I am continuing to thin the herd as they say. More are coming. We had a difficult year last year, after losing Elijah to an IED in Afghanistan. He was intent on trying to protect us from those who are plotting to bring us down. He gave his life for that. We're emerging stronger and feeling better in this new year; time dulls the pain a little. Let's just hope the sorry state of world affairs and our remarkably inept governmental administration don't completely bring this amazingly wonderful country of ours to it's knees. Prayer is not a bad idea!
