I have to thank forum member Retired W4 for this very nice 58. I had a great time meeting with him today and really enjoyed getting to talk with him. I can't recall a better transaction, and I've had a number of fine ones here and elsewhere.

Here's an S prefix 58 from 1967 sporting diamond PC Magna grips. What really stands out on this revolver is how little use it appears to have had over the years. This is number three for me, and it's the nicest one I own.

Retired W4, thank you again.

Nice!! That's still on my list, but I haven't found a good one at a reasonable price.
Congrats.

Next good S&W I find at a reasonable price will be the first lol. I'm not a handloader so whenever I'm in a store that sells any kind of ammo I take a look. 41 mag seems fairly easy to find at retailers. Even in NY where there was a mad rush because of background checks for ammo being implemented. I would have thought it was way down the manufacturers list.

I can never find 58s in our local stores or our pathetic gun shows. I think I've seen maybe two, and they were really worn and equally overpriced.

I took the 58 to the range today. I was shooting a 215 gr. SWC dropped from my H&G mold. It's a stout load, but it's not a wrist breaker. My fancy targets consist of Walmart paper plates with a drawn circle the diameter of a Coke can. Just like the three other 58s I've shot, this one is a fine shooting gun.

I'm no ace shooter, but at 25 yards I put two in the circle out of six. At 37 yards I hit the paper plate three times out of six but didn't get the circle. I'm confident I could improve on it with a pair of Pachmayr or Hogue grips, but I'm a traditionalist. The gun performed perfectly as I expected, and I couldn't be happier with it.

I had a hard time finding a Model 58 in CA and then a few years back, fellow at the Reno Gun show had a bout 5 of them. Got the ANIB one and planned on shooting it. Before I could, saw what I thought was an overpriced Model 13 HB up in Oregon. For $700.00 - way to much .....

Turned out to be an S prefix Model 58 -

Serial number put it at 1968. It had the diamond grips, service not concealed type, and the bottom fit was a tad off. Not quite sure how they got there. Replaced them with correct grips and the BK adapter.

Trigger is wide grooved. Not sure if it came that way. Swapping to wide smooth makes sense, grooved - not so much.

I like the smooth combat triggers on my guns along with the target hammers, no matter what the model is.

I had this one back at the range today. It's a great 58, but I have never shot one that wasn't.
