My Second Mofel 44 Hand Ejector turned 100 a few days ago. She was shipped to Emmons-Hawkins Hardware in Huntinton, WV, on Jan. 14th, 1924.

Now, through the kindness of another forum member, this kid has an original box. and "Helpful Hints" brochure. Though I am not sure about the age of the brochure it came with the box.

Other than one split corner seaam, the box is vin very nice conditon. A price of $56.50 is penciled on the bottom. The serial number is not legible.

The "Helpful Hints' brochur is printed on what almost appears to be a thin plastic with a translucent quality. I wondered if it was oil soaked paper of some sort but there are no oil stains in the box.

I've devoted most of the phots to the box as I had never seen one before and could not find any photos of one.

Any thoughts on repairing the detached corne of the boxr?

That revolver is a beauty and the box is a great addition.

On to why I posted:

Hahaha, I literally did a DOUBLE TAKE when I read this! I've mentioned before and coincidentally, just mentioned it in another discussion a few minutes ago.

The only S&W that I have ever requested a letter on is a .38 Hand Ejector M&P, Model of 1905 Fourth Change from late May, 1921 (357xxx) and Roy Jinks told me that it shipped to Emmons Hawkins Hardware Co. in Huntington, WV!

Love it!

Now I received this revolver as a high school graduation gift from my Grandfather, his best memory was that he bought it in 1923 and he gave it to me in June, 1990.

Revolver from 1921. In my family in 1923. Got the letter in 1999. Do all these dates give me seniority, and thus you have to sell your .44 to me? :D

Very nice acquisition, and that box is in very good condition! That one split corner seam can easily be repaired with a small right angle bracket (Home Depot, Ace, etc.), a couple of clothespins/spring clips, some white glue (the kind that dries clear), and a toothpick. Clip the bracket to the outside of the box with the clothespins/clips so that the cardboard edges meet, and carefully apply a thin bead of white glue with the toothpick. Allow to cure thoroughly, and voila!. In extreme cases, you can make a small cardboard reinforcement to go into the inside corner for additional support. Good luck!

Same gun/same box---mine was numbered to the gun---a THE box!!

That's the good news! The bad news is there's a HUGE, HORRIBLE STAIN on top of the box--and the corners could be in better shape.

Off it went to Gary Lowe (glowe hereabouts). It came back, fit as a fiddle, with NO stain! Gary has some sort of divine affinity with boxes---if they need fixin', he can fix 'em!

The very good news is it's very seldom you can tell where he fixed them---never mind you already know where he fixed them!

You can end up with pretty much whatever you want---a box that looks like new, or an old box that looks like it's been well cared for----even if it hasn't!

Another one was for a NM #3. This one was warped every place it had a place---SEVERELY warped---with some damage caused by the warpage---AND it too was THE box!

It came back dead square---with no damage!

He's one of those "been there and done that" folks when it comes to boxes.
