A bunch of 44 Magnums

Dan

Sounds to me like you are a shrewd businessman that helps the river of nice Smith and Wesson's keep flowing. I have been the personal recipient of some of the guns that have been through Dan's hands and I appreciate his willingness to bridle his hoarder instincts and pass on some of the nice guns that he finds to the rest of us. Any of you that have ever dealt with Dan, know him as 1st class all the way!

BTW - The wood on all three of your guns is quite stunning.

As always, thanks for sharing (in more ways than one...).

I'm still looking forward to the day I run across a S-prefix Model 29. Thanks for sharing the pics of those beautiful 29's.

Borrow the money from yourself, book the debt as an asset the way banks do, let the asset and expenditure balance each other out, and you have five new guns with no change in your net financial picture!

Or something. My congressman taught me everything I know about accounting. :D

My President with Al Gore's input taught me about accounting!!

If I could simply print money the way our current govt does. I'd simply buy S&W and dedicate a portion of their production to feed my addiction. No problem if I put the corporation in the hole. I'd have the union cut a deal with the White House. The union in exchange for an unfunded pension guarantee. Would encourage the govt to add a bunch zero's to the corp's bank account for the development of a green magnum that would reduce greenhouse emissions. S&W would have to Rugarize the barrels with stampings prohibiting it's use on Polar Bears. If the current Veep gets involved with the union's negotiations. We'd have to propose a green double barreled Balcony Model and include bullet hole decals for the front door.

BS aside and getting serious. I'm envious to say the least of your 44's. Nice catch in record time. The beauty I bet would even grab the attention and admiration of the young guys that believe a handgun must hold no less than 14 rds, have rubber grips, night sights and a rail for a laser. Showing my age. I have to admit to becoming addicted to S&W 44's after watching Clint Eastwood on the big screen say "make my day". I was instantly cured of my desire to own genuine Colt single action revolvers taking a 15% hit backing out of a lay-away.

I'm fortunate enough to be blessed with a single 4 inch 29-2. I've come real close to adding some 44's to my collection but I caught the dreaded 41 magnumitus disease. My miserly budget can't seem to find a cure or allow enough extra folding doe for both 41 and 44's.

Pardon my ignorance and laziness doing a search to find the answer. What is a S-prefix model? Is the S prefix significant to the model 29 only or is it on other S&W revolvers?

Gov't control!

Hey Qmark
In 1968 our gov't enacted The Gun Controll Act of 1968 which, in part, required a specific serial number for every gun manufactured. In the N frame serial numbering system S&W used a prefix of "S" which was used in the past on another frame size so there was a possibilty of a dupilcate serial number. S&W changed their serial numbering system to a different letter prefix for each frame size and even for some different models. At that time the "N" serial prefix was adopted for the N frame guns.
Short answer; an S serial prefix on an N frame gun means it was manufactured prior to 1969!

these guns came in an approximately 50 gun collection that I was privileged to purchase with the combined purchasing power of myself and 2 other collectors. Alas all the guns I got are now in others collections :-)

Dan, how in the world did the three of you split up the loot? Looks like you had a lot of gems to choose from.

Well I went and looked at around 25-30 of the guns but the owner was short on time so I didn't get to see it all but I made a list with his asking prices. I then made some calls and found the investors I needed to complete the purchase ( had a couple guys that declined that regretted it later ). We went in with a pretty good Idea of who was getting what. There was then a selection process with the other guys for the unknown guns. it was a smooth and trouble free. the collection had RM's, OD's, a Straightline, T-locks to Model 16's and way more. it was a collectors dream.

Jcelect, thx for the history lesson. Seems like I learn something nearly every time I visit this board.

I just noticed something. I do not recall seeing a .44 magnum, at least in the configurations before the full lug barrel abominations, that had anything other than a ramp sight. Did the "real" (29s, pre-29s, early 629s) ever come with Patridge front sights?
