A Dinosaur at the Range Today

Another dinosaur here. I have an 1898 Krag in 30-40 and just love the old girl. Have had a couple offers to sell but I spent many hours looking down krag barrels to find one that didn't look like the inside of a coal mine. Then shoot my 1943 vintage M1 Garand. and maybe for grins and giggles shoot a couple lever actions usually in 357 mag and 44 mag. Then go over to shoot one of my BSA single shot 22 rifles. Frank

I have a 3 screw Ruger Blackhawk in .30 carbine that always draws attention at the range. It's a little loud. I've also heard the "I've gotta get one of those" comments a few times after letting people shoot it. It's a flat shooting, fun gun to shoot.

I get a similar response when ever I take my Model 53 .22 Jet out to play. The first round touched off tends to stop things and the second shot gets a "what the heck is that?" After that I usually have to hand it off to a new found friend with a great big smile on their face. It always gives people perma-grin.

How can I not chime in? 70+ bad dominant eye, shooting right handed with my left eye only; Ruger old model Blackhawk .45Colt. Standing next to the guys and gals banging hundreds of rounds at the 7 yd target and waiting for them to switch clips. Then I shoot and hit the fifty yard gong (so they hear it) in between each of their reloads. The concept of fun does change when you become the 'old guy'. J

About 10 years ago a group of younger (than me) guys came down w/ their brand new AR's and were shooting about a full 30 rounder a piece at each target. The targets looked like swiss cheese. My buddy and i were sighting in 22-250's. So we decided to have a little fun and shot little itty bitty bullseye groups in the x ring on their targets. They would retrieve their targets and boy the back slapping and dang man u can shoot pretty good's were flying. Never mind the rest of the target looked like a shotgun hit it. We got a chuckle out of it anyway.

Dinosaurs shooting Dinosaurs

All
Well here is my Dinosaur shooting story.

I went to an Appleseed Shoot in North Carolina several years ago (man I can't remember when) and took my M1 Garand thinking all the guys and gals would have BIG iron, and a friend of mine had his FAL.

Man was I surprised when only one other person had a .308 (out of about 35 people) and the rest of the folks had 10/22's with scopes and a few AR's.

I don't think anyone was happy being next to me and I didn't shoot all that well but I sure had fun.

It's always good hearing stories where people have no idea what this or that is and you can convert one or at least educate them about "the good stuff".

I'm a 28 year old dinosaur so if y'all ever see me at the ange shooting my model 13 3 inch please say hi!!! I usually just get chuckles at the range...And I shoot if from 3 yards to 75 feet and mostly double action a it is my carry gun

Seven Yards ?? That's what we used to call ''sling shot range''

You should see the looks I got when I too out my mint G41M to test fire it. the shooters present thought at first it was some sort of 98K with a bulbous silencer on the front of the barrel. Another one that gets funny looks is when I take out my original Remington XP 100 in 221 Fireball .

Yep, I hear ya on that! I have on too, except it was one of the 7mm BR guns. Previous owner had it reamed out to 7mm-08. Talk about muzzle flip! It's not the most enjoyable gun to shoot and has been gathering dust for quite some time. This thread has inspired me to take it to the range and "act like a dinosaur." Maybe tell the kiddies it was a NASA gun from the 60's - intended for use Mars expeditions. :D
