Col. Albert M. Willoughby, USAF Ret. died 10-17-2011 at Midwest City OK.
He was born in Union Point GA in 1922 and enlisted in the AF in 1941 and flew 35 B-17 missions over Germany.
I first knew him as a Capt. not long after WW11 when he was assigned to Tinker Base Ops and I was a crew chief at B&T aircraft. I flew with him on several test flights as flight engineer. He was the kind of pilot that you loved to fly with, very relaxed but ready for anything.
He left Tinker and years later returned as a LT. Col. assigned as the IG.
He was promoted to Col. and eventually became my Div. Chief. I had no idea that he would remember me so many years later but he did, even got my name right. He turned out to be the best boss that I ever had. When you went to meetings with him and things got tough you never worried because he backed you all of the way.
He retired in 1973 and was active in AF organizations and civic clubs.
One of his proudest accomplishments was helping organize the Honor Flight Program in Oklahoma. He lived to see more than 500 WW11 vets flown to Washington to see the WW11 and other memorials with more flights scheduled.
He was a man of honor and a credit to mankind. May God bless his family.
