A great aircraft book, great read.

I had bought this book back in 1998 and loved it and loaned it to a Wal Mart pilot who had to have a stent put in, for him to read while recovering and I never got it back. I got another used one and am reading it again. The title is "Flight of Passage" by Rinker Buck IBSN 0-7868-6100-2 published in 1997. This is about the author who was 15 and his older brother who was 17 at the time of the cross country flight in 1966. They had rebuilt a 1946 PA-11 Piper Cub and they flew it from New Jersey to Orange County California and the book covers the rebuild and the flight that sarted on July the fourth of 1966. This covers the times of my flying hours, from 1964 thru 1973. A very good book if you have ever dreamed of a real cross-country flight and never had the time or money to do it. I paid 5.00 delivered for mine and I found paperbacks of the book for less than two dollars. This is the 60's as I remember them when 80 octane was 40 cents a gallon. Jeff

Hey! I have to get it. That was my era too. I started flying in 1965 or 1966. Like most I started and stopped once or twice. My most active years were in the 1970s. Started out with a luscombe, 150, yankee, cheeta, finaly bought a metalised tri pacer and a citaberia GCBC. Loved it, but its a rich mans sport. It used to be a little easier in those days. Unless someone is going to fly for a career its just too darn exspendsive now for a normal working man to learn.

My son-in-law had a 1946 Luscombe but crashed it recently. Walked away from it with a few bruises, but the plane was less fortunate.

Another fascinating book if you are interested in the history of aviation is Ernest K. Gann's Fate Is The Hunter.

If you liked Flight of Passage, you may also like The Cannibal Queen by Stephen Coonts. They both came out around the same time as best I can recall.
