The only 4" SS python that is $1500 is probably missing the barrel... although I think the OP made a good trade.
Actually if both sides are happy then both guys made good trades.
IMO he had a minimum of $3,800 in guns and cash on the table..... for a Stainless steel Python w/ an "asking price" of $3 Grand...........

Then again, it's possible each person could have a total of $1,200 invested on their side, trying to obtain something that would cost them $3,000+ today. As was said above, if both are happy, everyone won.
Pythons are nice to look at, Smiths are for work.

For the money and guns that person put out for the Python, he could have easily bought a new Korth. I've seen them selling new for around $3500 on GB.

I guess Python's are hot sellers these days. Last year I sold my 99%+ 1976 Python for $2500 no box or paper work. Guy drove over 100 miles to my house to get it. It was for sale less than 1 day. OP Nice Score!!

I have had 2 Pythons for many years. A 1966-and 1967 vintage both with 6" bbls. I paid a whopping $125 for the 1966 gun and later paid $800 for the 1967 gun. Outside of an RM, there is no S&W I would trade for either gun. I have 30 S&W's and only a few Colts. Pythons are riding the crest right now and are very expensive. Not better than a nice 357 S&W pre M27, but for some reason, they have taken off like the old SAA's did. GI 45 auto's too. Big Larry

Yes, a nice trade. Great time to exchange some Pythons for S&Ws (or cash). I've mentioned this before, but the story fits with your trade, so I'll mention it again. Traded a six inch SS Python (no box, etc.) which had been fired but was very nice for a 5 inch pre-27, an 8 3/8 28-2, and a 4 inch 25-5 in hard chrome. Forgot to ask for the five Benjamin kicker though. Enjoy your S&Ws.

Totally agree with you on the value. Although I would have to see the condition of the STS Python in order to make sure it isn't more like a $1200 revolver.
The price of Pythons, and other "snake" Colts, has just become a ridiculous fad over the last 7yrs. The whole hype has been internet dealer generated followed by herd mentality. Couple the main buying demo being older retirees or close to it, and you have people with the means to drive a market up way past what they are realistically worth.
Don't get me wrong, I love Colts and the Python. Carry a snub every day. However, considering what they are and the quality of them, they should only be $1500 in great condition. Unless you're talking about the early ones which were given time, cost, and skills needed to make them special like originally intended.
I have been studying these guns heavily for the past 5yrs, and just got done writing a very comprehensive buying guide on the Python from this study. Without going into major detail, all Pythons are not the same, and only the ones made in the first 10yrs of production really have the quality and attention to detail that is desirable. The rest just continued to drop in finish/build quality year after year.
Everyone knows S&W had quality issues in the more modern age of manufacturing, well, Colt was no different, and the quality of later Pythons is something I will never pay today's money to own. The difference between the two is, S&W enthusiasts fully admit this, but Colt enthusiasts try to bury that fact and act like all Colts are perfect creations. Hence the reason a Colt guy is on the S&W forum, because the pony forum is joke anymore.
Congrats to the OP for taking advantage of another person following the crowd.

I'm with Dr.Lou. I have never understood the attraction some folks have for those guns. Complicated internals, finicky, and while the triggers are nice, they aren't that nice.

They are a good gun, hand fitted, work of art. The question is~~are they worth the current price? That depends on the buyer, for me no. But then I am probably the exception, I only expect a gun to work.

Well my mid seventies colt Python 357mag w/6" barrel in that colt bluing that looked like plastic was awesome. I regret parting with it. She would ping small rocks on the 100yd berm with my reloads constantly.
