For me at least anyways. Having had to sell my guns prior to a move more than 20 years ago, I just recently began to build my collection once again, pandemic and all. So, I had to make a decision, should it be another S&W Model 10 or a Model 629. Reflecting on it I came across a decent enough deal on a 686-6 through PSA (a shout out to them also, I ordered the gun a week ago Friday and it was ready for pick up today at the LGS) and so I've found a happy medium.....for now at least. So big brother has joined little brother at home.

Not knowing your needs, I would've opted for the 4" barrel, but you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that finds fault with a 686.
I too have had to sell some pieces along the years, and in my case, I could not afford most of them now.

The best way to have a happy medium is to cross her palm with silver. Preferably a silver colored S&W revolver! Congrats on your new gun. A 686 is a magnificent beast.
I always tell myself. A guy NEEDS 1 shotgun, one rifle, and one handgun. Anything over that is a luxury. It still doesn't make it feel any better when you have to down size due to problems. Life seldom goes the way you plan. You have to play the hand you were given.

No, a fellow needs at least 2 rifles, a rimfire 22 and a centerfire for larger game. You might get by on one shotgun, if it were a Remington 870 with a couple of barrels (12 ga of course) but a nice OU 20 ga for field and clay bird shooting on Sunday afternoon is really a basic need. In handguns, a good 22 (I actually prefer one each, target auto and revolver) and a 38/357 revolver as well as a 45 on the 1911 platform are my bottom line.
Of course to fit in with the youngsters I’ve been forced to also acquire an AR pattern MSR and most recently a 9mm semi auto.
One shotgun, one rifle and one handgun? It’s a good thing this is the land of the free and the 2nd Amendment still stands! If someone is a serious shooter, he might get by with just one gun that he shoots well, but where would be the fun in that?

For me while I accumulated a lot of guns over the years have gotten to the point where collecting then doesn’t interest me. Seeing others collections and the interesting history of the older models I do enjoy ( which is mostly why I visit this site)
But my guns are bought and owned for specific things I need them for.
I don’t do any shooting that requires a shotgun anymore, so don’t need one.
I shoot multiple types of pistol and rifle competition that puts my minimum of pistols required at about 8

Nice addition to rebuild your collection. Never can go wrong with ANY length of 686. They are so sweet to shoot. Now you still have those other 2 you need to get as well!

Congratulations! The Governor is a cool, unique revolver. I only wish that they were offered with steel frames. I own a Taurus Judge and the idea of shooting .410 Buckshot out of a lightweight scandium frame seems unpleasant.
The Taurus Judge Magnum is fun to shoot, but it weighs 37oz vs the 29oz Governor.
But then again, I'm used to shooting 3" shells. The Governor can only chamber 2.5" shells which have less recoil, so it may not be so stout as I expect.
I'd like to see a range report whenever you get a chance to take it out shooting.
