Our only Doberman, Sam-Samari went over the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. It's never easy saying goodbye.

Two days ago he quit eating, was coughing and didn't want to get off his doggie bed. He acted miserable. We took him to an Emergency Vet clinic not far from home. They kept him over night, did x-rays and sonograms. He had a mass in his chest and another on top of his stomach. Cancer!! The vet agreed that it would be a mercy to put him down. He went quietly with his two people petting and talking to him. He knew he was not alone. In another week of so, we will start looking for another Dobie to adopt and give love and a good home.

The only breed Anne and I have owned for the past 40+ years have been Dobermans. When we get to Heaven, we hope to see a whole pack of Harrison Dobies grinning and wagging their stubby tails to greet us.

Thanks for your story and am sorry for your loss. We get very attached to our animals as they become part of the family. Am afraid our 14 year old lab's time is limited. Also has a tumor and surgery not recommended at her age. Every day with her is treasured. Getting another soon will help your through your loss. Good luck.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have no doubt that when your time comes, you will be met on the other side and they all will be healthy, happy and glad to see you.

So sorry for your loss. Pets provide unconditional love and companionship. A vet once consoled my wife and myself by reminding us that we are fortunate to enjoy and love many pets throughout our lives. He was right.

A wise vet and true words.

"Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stones of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.

"Gentlemen of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fierce, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come from encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of his company to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in his embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death."

“A Man’s Best Friend is his Dog”: The Story of Old Drum - Orvis News.

I'm sorry to hear about Sam- Samari.

Sad day for sure. That short stubby tail is one of the best memories, the little stubby thing looks like a rattlesnake without the rattles! Best memories of my last Weimaraner when I came home from work and her smile and going round in circles! You can never unsee that love they show/give you! You’ll start a new love with the next one again. They never fail to love you and show it, as you do the same. I could go on and on, know what I mean?
Again, so sorry for your loss, but you look forward to meeting all the stubby tails “rattling “all at once with their smiling faces when you get there. Stay cool, Jeff T.

^^ The best tribute to a departed critter is a successor. My condolences.

Ted is showing his age and I fear we may have only a year or so left.
