A Horrible Experience

My wife bought and was watching the first season DVD of Longmire. The problem is there is a special features section which includes Robert Taylor talking about his character. So here's good ol' Walt talking in his normal Aussie accent. It was horrible! I'll never be able to watch Longmire again without expecting him to say "G'day Mate" to Branch.

Don't forget Andrew Lincoln who plays Rick on The Walking Dead. I've seen videos of him switching from that soft Southern drawl to his native English accent in the middle of a sentence.

Damian Lewis. I saw him in Band of Brothers and then in the short-lived TV series Life and was absolutely floored to find out he's a Brit. He does a dead perfect American.

To me, Hugh Laurie will always be Bertie Wooster! Who was that other fellow, who played Jeeves? Wonder how much speech coaching those folks have to go through; it is impressive how they can lose their accents.

It is funny that Brits are the best at doing the drawl. Americans that are not native born southerners can almost NEVER pull it off for more than a sentence. Amongst southerners anyway.
I think that's perfect proof that southerners are closest to speaking the King's English.

Many characters in "Band Of Brothers"--notably Damian Lewis, who played Winters and now stars in "Homeland"--were played by Brits.

British actors typically are an awful lot better at accents than Americans.
Some of the really horrible work I've heard was Yank actors trying to sound "Southern" (like that was just one accent), delivering lines written by Californians who think they know how Southerners talk. And then there was the worst of all time: Dick Van Dyke's catastrophic attempt at a Cockney accent in "Mary Poppins".

We do have some actors who do accents well: Downey and Depp manage British pretty effectively. DiCaprio is very good. So is Don Cheadle. And of course Meryl Streep, the greatest actress working today, can do any accent to perfection.

Lewis's Midwestern American accent reportedly was so convincing that some people on "Band Of Brothers" initially refused to believe he's British.

When Christopher was hired to play Conor McLeod in The Highlander he did not speak a word of English. I believe French was his native and possibly only language at the time. Every line he spoke was basically just copying someone else. Which actually worked well for the character since he was supposed the be hundreds of years old and travelled the world and spent livetimes in different places.

Jokes aside it does go both ways... a Brit buddy says that Renee Zellweger's (a Texan) accent in the Bridget Jones moves is the best he has ever heard.... "Spot On" in his words.

I dont know his name but the guy who plays Al Copone in Boardwalk Empire is a Brit. He was also in Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, Band of Brothers, Snatch, the gangster movie with Depp and a bunch more

Actually, Lauren Cohan (Maggie) was born in Philly and lived in NJ before her parents moved to England. Or as she puts it, "I'm American by birth, and English by accent. I grew up just outside London, in Surrey."

I'm a fan of British comedy, esp. Blackadder, so for me it was just the opposite. First episode of House I watched I was floored he could sound so American.

Took me a bit to adjust my brain so when I saw him on there I didn't see the Thick as a Whale Omelette Prince Regent or Lt. George. Fortunately his House look was very different from either of those.
