Thank you for writing to voice your opposition to the Assault Weapons Ban. Like you, I believe that the right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Constitution’s Second Amendment. The recent Supreme Court decisions reinforced this fact, but I believed that this was the case prior to those decisions.

While the right to bear arms is enshrined by the Second Amendment to the Constitution, I believe that we have a collective interest in keeping guns out of the hands of those who want to harm the innocent.  I believe it is possible to strike a reasonable balance.  I have long advocated for faster and more accurate background checks so legal purchasers can receive their guns quickly while ensuring criminals do not illegally purchase and possess firearms. In 2011, I proposed S. 436, the Fix Gun Checks Act to provide more funding to states to compile required background data for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).  This legislation builds on the National Rifle Association-supported NICS Improvements Amendment Act, passed by Congress in 2007.  Ensuring that this information is comprehensive and up to date will protect law enforcement from criminals with illegally obtained weapons while speeding up the process for law abiding citizens.

You may also be pleased to know that I have successfully fought to create new opportunities for gun owners to exercise their right to use guns. For example, in the 109th Congress, I secured federal money to expand the scarce hunting grounds in New York State by creating a financial incentive for private landowners to allow hunters access to their property.

Thank you for contacting me about this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if I can ever be of assistance to you on this, or any other matter.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Schumer
United States Senator

He is one of the biggest, phoniest *******s in there.

When I worked back in D.C. for LEAA, he told a rape victim that the revolver that she had was sufficient for her protection and that she had no need for a semi-automatic pistol. It was during the debate before passage of the Brady Bill.

Taking firearms from law abiding citizens is not "reasonable balance" I have yet to see any proposal that will take firearms from criminals.

As a NYer I can tell you Schumer does a lot for our state. The benefits of having him as our Senator far outweigh the negatives. But on this issue he is and always has been wrong. Crime has NOTHING to do with our right to bear arms. Guns are nothing more than a tool. Crime can be committed with a piece of paper. Targeting law abiding citizens is harassment.

If the purpose of the Senator is to go to Washington and try to come back with more of other peoples' stuff than you pay in taxes, then maybe he is "good" for New York. But, it is kind of like adding up the value of all your Christmas presents and subtracting what you spent to see if you made out. The moral status of an act is not altered by whether or not you made out. The argument that poor people should favor taxing the rich is a good example. If Senator Schumer has any redeeming qualities, I cannot locate them. I am a former NY resident and have voted in NY elections.

All you have to do is to look back at the 94' ban and see where Chuckie stood..... He was right there with the commies from CA in pushing for the bans.

"I believe that we have a collective interest in keeping guns out of....". That term pretty much tells ya who 'chuckie' is.

I got the exact same form letter. It's meant to sound ambiguous but you only have to look at his voting record to see the "real" Mr. Schumer.

This is EXACTLY the problem the Founders sought to avoid by setting up a federalist system with a weak central government. Each State was to fend for itself EXCEPT for the most basic of things like defense with the theory being that people will move to the States that are performing well and away from those not acting in their best interest, leaving them to either change their ways or fade away. With the Federal government skimming so much from the States and using one person's money to bribe another, the system fails and you can observe what happens.

I'm sorry any one who feels a Senator, ready willing and able to cast a vote to limit a right is not one who does more good than harm, and because of attitudes such as yours we are hindered in our lives by the likes of Shumer and his minions.

There is NO amount of "good" that Schumer can do. . .that will ever come close to outweighing trying to take away our constitutional rights.

If he wants to help violate yours or our 2nd amendment rights all the good that he has done is for nothing. That's why we keep having to defend our rights because we keep electing these same people who
want to take our guns away .AS long as we keep electing them we will have the same bull to put up with. I say vote him out and get someone who will defend our 2nd amendment rights and not infringe on our rights.

I seem to remember a very pro-gun rights lady from NY named Gillibrand sp? that was elected to the US House. After a 5minute meeting with Chuck-U Shumer, she became an anti gun-rights rep!

Sounds like gun registration to me. Step one in disarming the populous.
Secured money for hunting! With what? Rocks and sticks! Are you seriously buying this boatload of ****?!?

You voters in NY need to get rid of Schumer! This guy needs to retire! He's been around way to long.

Chuck Schumer always has been and always will be a puppet of the Wall Street and the NYC elites. And no, New York State sends much, much more money to Washington than we ever get back.
