This morning I called the kids, 12,19,7,5 outside. Yesterday I bought a new flag, Made in the USA no less, and this morning I wanted to put it. I guess I could have just went out and put it up myself, but I am trying to teach the kids about respect, not only for themselves, but for the country and the flag. I was proud as my oldest, lowered the weathered flag down slowly, my girls Hallie, 7 and Clara 5, reach up and held the flag as John jr 9 unclipped it. The boys who are both boy scouts, then folded the flag the proper way. (we will save it for their flag retirement ceremony)
The process was reversed, the girls holding the new flag as Johnny clipped it on, and Carl raised her up. A breeze came up unfurling her in the morning light. Funny, just got chills watching my kids do somthing they knew was special, even if they still dont understand how special. As we finished our little ceremony, I looked up and neighbors across the street had stopped doing their yard work and walked to the edge of the sidewalk to watch the raising of old glory.
It restores my faith in the country, that there are people who still believe in Old Glory and for what she stands for.
