This morning I called the kids, 12,19,7,5 outside. Yesterday I bought a new flag, Made in the USA no less, and this morning I wanted to put it. I guess I could have just went out and put it up myself, but I am trying to teach the kids about respect, not only for themselves, but for the country and the flag. I was proud as my oldest, lowered the weathered flag down slowly, my girls Hallie, 7 and Clara 5, reach up and held the flag as John jr 9 unclipped it. The boys who are both boy scouts, then folded the flag the proper way. (we will save it for their flag retirement ceremony)
The process was reversed, the girls holding the new flag as Johnny clipped it on, and Carl raised her up. A breeze came up unfurling her in the morning light. Funny, just got chills watching my kids do somthing they knew was special, even if they still dont understand how special. As we finished our little ceremony, I looked up and neighbors across the street had stopped doing their yard work and walked to the edge of the sidewalk to watch the raising of old glory.

It restores my faith in the country, that there are people who still believe in Old Glory and for what she stands for.

Excellent! Have you considered a "Don't Tread on Me Flag" (and the history behind it) as well for an additional teaching moment for the kids?

A great thing to do with your family!

COLUMBIA, Mo. – A new document meant to help Missouri law enforcement agencies identify militia members or domestic terrorists has drawn criticism for some of the warning signs mentioned.

The Feb. 20 report called "The Modern Militia Movement" mentions such red flags as political bumper stickers for third-party candidates, such as U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, who ran for president last year; talk of conspiracy theories, such as the plan for a superhighway linking Canada to Mexico; and possession of subversive literature....
The Gadsen flag is not mentioned in this article but it's mentioned in the report.

Awesome story. They will remember this to talk about and show their children.

By the way, very cool Cuda. I am a big fan and had a '70 Cuda in high school (early 80's)

Good job, sir. I would imagine that those values and memories will be with them throughout their lives.

How well I remember one fateful day in 1963, when three of us were chosen to lower our elementary school's flag to half staff. The three of us were only 7 or 8 years old, but we performed our duty with as much solemn respect as any military honor squad.

That's just great! Can't say much more than that. Teaching that kind of stuff to your kids is just about the greatest thing a man can do for his kids, and the future of the country! I am sure that they will teach their kids the same kind of respect for the country, Old Glory, and all those who put everything on the line to preserve it.

Good job Dad!

Good for you, cudamank! I got a lump in my throat reading your post. Too many kids / people these days have no respect for our flag; I congratulate you for teaching your children well.

This is what we fly from the sail boat when in port after a race-get's some interesting "riff-raff"
