So I went to the Birch Run Gun Show, today, here in Michigan. I had no plans on going, but my Dad wanted to go and coaxed me into joining him. I've been buying a lot of guns lately and was almost hoping I wouldn't find anything interesting, so that I wouldn't have to spend any more money... almost. I even told myself that I'm not buying anything, unless I see a rare S&W revolver at a good price.

Well wouldn't you know it, after making my way through 3/4's of the tables, what do I see, but this 629-5 Mountain Gun, with a price tag of $699. I knew that was a good price (especially since I could see the original box sitting next to the gun). Still, I tried to play hardball, asking the seller if he would let me have it for that price, out-the-door (no tax). He explained that he was an employee of the owner and that the owner didn't usually haggle when it came to S&W's. He then went on to tell me that he wanted to buy the gun himself, if it didn't sell at the show. I thanked him for his time and walked away.

As I was walking through the last 1/4 of tables in the building, I could not get my mind off of the Mountain Gun. I told myself that if it is still there, after I make my way through the final tables, it was meant to be and I would buy it. Picture a guy speed-walking through a gun show and that's about what I must have looked like.

It was there when I got back (about 5 minutes later) so here's some pictures of my first Mountain Gun. From what I know, the 629-5 MG was only made in 1999. Does anyone know how many of these were made? Take care and happy hunting.

Is there a word or phrase for that uncomfortable feeling between saying "I'll think about it" and "I guess I'll take it"?

Nice buy sir!! You don't know how lucky you were my friend! Murphy's law says that when you walk away from a deal like that, it won't be there when you return!! I know. Happened to me on a LNIB 3" 24 and it still makes me sick. Enjoy your holidays.

Good deal. Do you have other 44s? Very expensive caliber to shoot. Even 44spl ammo is a fortune.

Great price on a wonderful gun.I paid more than that recently for a 625 mountain gun without box.Good find you will enjoy it a lot.

USUALLY IF YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE ! ! ! YOU WERE FORTUNATE TODAY. THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL REVOLVER AT A GREAT PRICE. ENJOY…….

I've hated all of mine and I swear I'll hate the next one too!!!! Great score!! My 625-6 (.45 Colt) is my grail Mountain gun. I appreciate the longer front sight base as on my 625-6 and on yours. They seem to add a "tuff" look to the front of the gun. Just a wee bit more weight up front isn't a bad idea either, IMO.

Can't beat that price on a no lock N Frame. Especially a 4" gun.

You could sell it on here for $850, and it would be a good deal for everyone involved. Get some targets or combats for it, and it will be a thing of beauty (it already is).

You did very, very well!

Congrats on your find!

Below is my 629-5 Mountain Gun called "The Flinch-Master" by a friend after shooting full power 44 Magnum rounds through it.

I picked mine up new in the box while stationed with the USAF in Anchorage, Alaska in 1999. It was easier to carry around than my 7 1/2" barreled Ruger Blackhawk.

girvin02;
Great buy of an excellent gun.

I don't have a REAL Mountain Gun but I think of this as a Mountain Gun:
My Model 624 (4") chambered, of course, in .44 Special:

Here's a load that works very well in the .44 Special (a homecast Mihec Hollow Point version of the H&G#503) ahead of 7.5 grs of Unique.

I also have a six cavity Mihec mould for the solid nose version for general practice. Either of these bullets will group under 1" at 25 yards and the recoil is NOT bothersome at all. Conversely, my standard 629 with 4" barrel is bordering on abusive with full charge .44 Magnums (24.0 grs of H110 behind the same bullets).

Just a thought or two...

A tremendous price. BTW, comparing the 625 MGs, especially in 45ACP, to any other model, is a little flawed. The only 626MG I want, the -4, is not common, not often sold, and more or less painfully expensive.

I have not come across a -4.After over a year of hunting for one I could afford.I finally found a 625-9 in 45 colt that did not break the bank.I know it has the (lock) but it has been only lightly used. And it shoots and carrys well.

Love the MG! I only have 1 and love it....would like to own more but they are very hard to find in the left coast.

Smart move! I've danced that same dance more than I can count - not always there when I return. Just lost a NIB, 4" 686-3 for $599. Still hurts...
