I stopped by a small, local 3-hour gun show Wednesday evening not expecting to find anything as is usually the case. I waltzed back out the door about an hour later (45 minutes of BS) with a 617 no dash in the original box complete with the original 'combat' grips, unopened tool bag, owner's manual, warranty card - everything -- all for $500. I kinda thought this was just a swell deal, especially after a friend was showing me a used 617 he had just bought with Goodyear grips, internal lock and no box for $700.

The date stamped on the inside of the grips is Feb 5, 1990 which coincides with the production date for that serial number range in SCSW and the condition is excellent.

I'm pretty happy.

Great find!! You have a lot of meat left on the bone in that purchase. I am trying to forget what I paid for a 617-1 4" a few months back. They are great revolvers. I really enjoy shooting them.

Very nice find! I pickup up the exact same gun in the same condition last year but I paid a little bit more. Enjoy it.

Congratulations on a great find. When you find a deal like that you have to jump all over it. I stumbled onto a dash 1 4-incher about 2 years ago at a local gun show, paid a little more than you did, but was still a happy camper!

Sir.
Congratulations on a good find. Take good care of the grips, they are worth a lot to the collector crowd.
I gave mine away many years ago and have watched the price of grips go thru the roof.
I put some other grips that fit me on the gun and have have shot many a golf ball, paper target, steel gong, and ARIZONA Wild Desert Lizards.

My 617 4 inch: after a good shooting session.

617

:) Great buy. I have a 617 and really enjoy shooting it. We even started a revolver steel plate match at our club on Friday nights, since now we have a good number of members that have bought one. I even bought a 2nd one. One is a pre'lock and the other has the lock. I recently bought the 317 8-shot with the 2" barrel, but did not like not having the adjustable sights, so I sold it and bought the 317 with the 3" barrel and Hi-Vis front sight.

Great revolvers. I am now looking to buy the Performance Center 2 1/2" model 627 in .357 magnum...:D

You got a fantastic deal on that puchase with them running around $700 usually and it's a wonderful revolver. The combat grips sell for a lot these days as I've seen them at gun shows where dealers are asking up to $250 and they sell for around $150 on Ebay when they are rarely listed there.

Superb shopping! The revolver itself can sell for $650 to $700 with rubber grips. Due to the $150-$250 + prices people are getting on Gun Broker and eBay for S&W combat stocks, its getting really tough to find any 1986-90 Smith that still has those grips!

Sorry, but without a picture it never happened...

Seriously, how do you expect other guys to SERIOUSLY envy you without photographic proof?

What a find! And...all there too, even the Combats. My 617 no dash had the combats "harvested' and were on the sellers table for $100 when I bought my 617. took me $150 thiis past week to finally make my gun right.

You did VERY well. Congrats.

I found this 617 no dash a couple of years ago, correct grips but no box or papers. I paid quite a bit more than you did, and was very happy to do so.
