Last evening we went to see "Hell or High Water" which stars Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster. I have to say that it was one of the best movies I have seen in several years. It's about two brothers who take up bank-robbing in West Texas during the Great Recession, and the two Texas Rangers who pursue them.
Although filmed in New Mexico for "financial reasons" (that is, tax credits) it was written by a Texan and has the Southwest's texture and heat and light down so well that you almost walk out of the theater feeling dusty and wrung out.

Lots of guns but that is not the focus of the film. And it is not the kind of movie that is going to encourage anyone to go into bank robbery as an occupation.
So, if you are looking for a strong story without vampires/spaceships/animation/CGI/superheroes or other nonsense you could not do better than this one.
