Last evening we went to see "Hell or High Water" which stars Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster. I have to say that it was one of the best movies I have seen in several years. It's about two brothers who take up bank-robbing in West Texas during the Great Recession, and the two Texas Rangers who pursue them.

Although filmed in New Mexico for "financial reasons" (that is, tax credits) it was written by a Texan and has the Southwest's texture and heat and light down so well that you almost walk out of the theater feeling dusty and wrung out.

Here is the trailer: [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQoqsKoJVDw[/ame]

Lots of guns but that is not the focus of the film. And it is not the kind of movie that is going to encourage anyone to go into bank robbery as an occupation.

So, if you are looking for a strong story without vampires/spaceships/animation/CGI/superheroes or other nonsense you could not do better than this one.

Thanks for the pointer. Too many movies these days rely on effects rather than story.

Catadjuster--you are dead on. If Ordnanceguy will excuse me drifting his thread a bit another such movie is Gone Girl. I saw it last night. I know is came out in '14 so I am considerably behind the times. Don't get to see many movies or TV. I could not have been more impressed. The lady detective in the movie stole the show.

And I can't wait to see Hell or Highwater. It's at the top of my list.

"Hell or High Water" has a 99 percent approval rating of 136 movie critics and a 90 per cent approval rating by viewers. It's from the same producers as "Sicario."

Unfortunately, it's never gotten a lot of ad space and it opened on a limited engagement a few weeks ago and just now is in general release.
Perhaps, like "The Usual Suspects" it'll gain momentum just by word of mouth by those who have seen it.

Been really wanting to see this! I like several of Jeff bridges movies. Also like Ben Foster a lot too, loved his role as Charlie Prince in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma

The previews look good and great actors all around. And I don't care if Jeff Bridges seems to be impersonating Tommy Lee Jones from No Country For Old Men, he's great in everything. Ben Foster especially, too.

Lemme guess: Duke and Dude?'mm

I was going to give this one a pass because it was written by the same writer who wrote "Sicario", which I thought was a potentially great story told with too many flaws, but after your comments and the trailer, it's definitely on the list.

Thanks for the heads up!
Just seen the movie trailer for The Magnificent Seven, even though I'm not to fond of remakes this looks like it could be pretty good! ;)

That will be a an On Demand movie. Nearest theater to me that is showing the movie is 2 hours away.

There was never anybody better at playing the Duke than John Wayne did it. Bridges is a much more versatile actor.

Now I'll just put on my Nomex suit and wait for the flames. :D
