One of my model 27's is stamped NYSP... It doesn't have the red insert in the front sight like I believe the first order had..... It does have the wide smooth trigger and It came with Pachmayers which were put on by the NYSP but I switched them out for some Elk Stag and a grip adapter..

Would a factory letter tell me anything additional about it? Anybody know if New York dealt directly with Smith & Wesson or went thru a jobber... ???

Any ideas would be appreciated...

The Highway Patrolman was the Model 28, not 27.

Prob just a typo...
Took me a while to find
Cool guns for sure

As already mentioned, it's a M28-2 and not a M27, if it is a Highway Patrolman. You mention a "first order"; what is the SN of your revolver? NYSP M28-2's are in the N546xxx range, and some had the red insert/white outline, some didn't.

NYSP dealt directly with S&W on the order, which had started out as a custom order in 1979 of 3100 fixed sight .357 Magnums based on the .38/44 Heavy Duty. It was to be numbered as the M520; after the gun had been designed and put into production, NYSP cancelled the order as they did not want to wait the 6 months it would take to manufacture and deliver this custom model. They elected to purchase 3100 4" M28-2's, which were already in inventory and ready for delivery. The M520's are in the SN range of N557750-N560860, not far past the M28-2's. S&W completed a production run of 3000 of the M520 and sold them on the open market.

NYSP

My 28-2 NYSP starts with #N545 on the Serial number and shipped on July 17,1979 as the letter paragraph below states..

"We have researched your Smith & Wesson .357 Highway Patrolman Model 28-2, Pinned & Recessed Variation, caliber .357 Magnum. Company records indicate that this handgun, with serial number N545XXX was shipped from the factory on July 27, 1979 and delivered to New York State Police Headquarters, Albany, NY. The records indicate that this revolver was shipped with a 4-inch barrel with ramp front sight, brush blue finish, checkered walnut grips and stamped with the N.Y. State Police property marking on the left side of the frame. This shipment was a large shipment, but the Smith & Wesson invoice is not available, we have enclosed a copy of the shipping record page for this shipment. The target accessories, the red ramp front sight and red ramp were added after the revolver was shipped."

That might be a pretty early gun in the order. It appears that NYSP had already decided against the M520 before they made it official. When I bought my M520, it came with a Factory Letter dated December 1980, signed by Roy Jinks, and gave somewhat of a timeline about NYSP's initial order and its cancellation in favor of the M28-2. The SN range I mentioned is what SCSW says about the NYSP guns.
