A number of states have closed K-12 grade schools, and I’m sure there will be more to follow. This creates a number of problems, the main one is there will be a Large Number of children who will Not receive a no or low cast breakfast and lunch. Which means that our local food banks-food/pantries may be overwhelmed with requests for help. So PLEASE DONATE, as you can, to you to your local food bank/pantry.

As I can’t be my normal smart mouth self, and I get No joy out of posting the above, I am requesting NO Likes on this please. Just give what you can..

Thanks all,
Fred

The two local school districts in my area are going to hold a joint meeting Monday March 16 to figure out what they are going to do.

This is a very rural area but most all the other districts are shutting down so my best guess is ours will also.

If not, if one kid or teacher gets sick a good bet there will be lawsuits saying you should have know better and shut it down. Its that kind of a world today!

*****New info they just closed the school for at least 2 weeks!******

Florida public schools are closed for the next two weeks but were already being closed for spring break for one week anyway. All the schools in the counties near me are still serving lunch to go each weekday for the kids who don't have food at home.

We were coming up on spring break week after next, which made the decision here easier to just have a longer break, so to speak.

Our district is keeping food services open and passing out the breakfasts/lunches for “drive by and snatch” pick-up at the various schools; no eating on location. That will hopefully mitigate the problem for poor families somewhat.

PS: Just heard from a former colleague that the district is also running meal delivery along a number of central bus routes to reach those who don’t have transportation.

An unintended consequence is what happens with healthcare workers. I heard where something like 40% or 50% of nurses have school age kids. Probably similar for other healthcare workers. Concern is that pulling kids from school may cause a large number in healthcare to stay home because they need to look after their school age kids with the schools closed.

ALL Louisiana schools, including LSU, are closed for at least 30 days. The news releases say that kids will still get their meals. Not sure how that's going to happen...

They will have the food workers coming in every day and fixing lunches for the kids that are eligible and have the families of these kids drive them over to get the meals. That's what one of the ladies at church said today; she is a teacher and the teachers will be helping out.

My daughter lives in Cincinnati. Schools are closed in Ohio till at least April 3rd. She "heard" depending on the situation, schools may not open for the rest of the school year.

Who's gonna be taking care of these kids if both parents work, which seems to be the norm these days.

Not just breakfast and several of our local school systems have set up stations where the kids can go and pick up and bag lunch while the schools are closed.

I understand that here, at least some of the schools are having "drive thru" food service for eligible kids even though the schools are closed. I suppose that Mom (or someone) will have to drive those kids to schools. At least in San Antonio, all schools are going to be closed for at least the next week or two (who knows how long it will turn out to be?) - that's all public and private schools and even all of the colleges and universities.

The schools here went on Spring Break as of Friday. The decision has been made it extend it to two weeks this year, then re-evaluate.
I'm happy about this as my soon to be daughter-in-law works at one of the elementary schools.

Mine go to a charter and have been on Spring break since Monday, and are set to go back on Thursday. But the local public district has extended their break. Our charter is deciding what to do tomorrow. I'll be surprised if they go back before the end of the month. I have the luxury of being able to work from home pretty much as much as I want, so we'll be OK with that (not to mention mine are teens and can fend for themselves when I'm out), assuming claims of "I'm bored!" don't push me over the edge. Of course, I expect to work them so hard around the house they'll beg to go back to school.

There's the crux of the matter, how can working folk who are not paid if they don't attend look after their kids. The casino industry in Vegas does not have a rep for sympathy in this regard. Having said that, the Wynn announced today that they are closing for two weeks and will be paying their full time employees. Just this afternoon the governor announced the closure of all K-12 schools. If you look at the video in the link, the guy next to the governor is the Superintendent of the Clark County school district that covers Las Vegas. He looks like he wants to puke. Thus far he had steadfastly refused to close the schools. We shall have to see how this plays out for the parents.
