it looks as though the rust was superficial, just like the VZ24 mentioned in post #8.

I would at least show your friend how to wax his gun. :)
 
Just put it all back together, the innards was surprisingly clean. The bolt had some minor rust on it.

As far as before and after pictures, I think it comes close to being miraculous. I really thought there would be spray painting involved.

Hurts me to know it will be in the prior shape in a year.

just a for the record post, but if you are going black paint, a step up from black Krylon engine paint is brake caliper paint. Good to 900f or so, and reasonably chemical resistant. Fairly popular with those that repaint Ruger 10/22 receivers now they use paint instead of anodizing.
