A Powder Question for older...reloaders

I used the standard Winchester primers with any "Ball" type powder
and never had a problem, since I did hot have any 296/H110 , back then.

Maybe someone that used "Mag" primers with 571, will chime in and
give us some info on what they can do, for you?

Talked to the fellow this AM and he dumped all the stuffat a pawn shop... I may try to buy some of the 571 from them...as long as the price is reasonable...I truly don't NEED it. Was looking at another powder lot I have to see if I had anymore 571...about a 1/2 pound...but I found 230 231 another 452 some 473 630 680 295 296 and some other powders. Including DuPont Bulk Smokeless about 8 lbs of Alcan 8 and 3 pounds of Alcan 5...even found am Alcan loading chart

I used 571 for heavy 2-3/4 12 gauge duck loads. An 1-3/8 ounce of #4 shot, back when lead was still legal on waterfowl. You wanted to be sure you had the friction ring set correctly on the A5 when you shot it. Never used it in handgun cartridges.

I used that same load AA cases red Win wad 1 3/8 copper plated 5s with 571 on ducks. Guiding one day I pass shot many ducks(Pintails). Party couldn't hit the darn things. 10 point ducks and we could have shot 70 total. Only 30-35 yard shots. You could also use 27 1/2_grains of Alcan 7 too...loaded number 3 shot for Canada geese with either powder

10.0 grains of 571/HS7 under a 158 grain bullet is my go to for 357.

Cast bullet or jacketed? I want to try that slow burner in my long win 94. Wonder if it would be ok in357 Max? It is a great handgun cal for deer up to about 150 yds

IMO just like W540/HS-6, W571/HS-7 benefits greatly from the use of a magnum primer.

If he also has 540 its good for much more than shotgun shells. I use HS-6 for .38 Special +P ammo, for the 45 Colt and medium range cast .357 Magnum ammo. Too bad he took the powder to the pawnshop, it will probably cost you more now than if you bought it directly from him. Oppsss.

When I was younger, about 16, a older hunting friend showed me what a 2 3/4", "Short Mag" loaded with #4 lead pellets could do.

He waited for a mallard to come straight over us and estimated about 16 feet and pulled the trigger.
After a small wait, we saw the bird that was 70 yards above us, fold up and start falling.

A few years later, w571 and Blue Dot were helping me bag a limit of ducks, with no problems.
The only problem was that some of those 70 yard birds that fell dead and not spinning with a broken wing or slowing down some how,
if they hit the water, breast first, would sometimes split the skin
and have to be breasted, instead of picked, for the BBQ, with the skin on.

Plus lead pellets were a lot easier on your teeth, than steel pellets !!

Just looked through an old Speer#10 load book and it had loads for several calibers from 38 spec thru 45 colt. But I see a lot of it has already been mentioned. And, Sorry about yer bad luck.
