I just had a fellow call me with a lot of reloading stuff for sale...most I didn't want or need...2 P-W loaders..one a junker.. but he had a bunch of powder. Had 2 8 pound containers of Win 571(HS7). Been years but it was a mag shotgun powder. The price is really right if I can find a real use for it. Any handful uses for 571? Even when I had the reloading business I never had much call for 571...But for 5 bucks a pound I could possibly use at least 1 8 pound container if I can find a use for it. I loaded some mag shotgun shells with it back in the 80s. No handguns. Anyone ever use the stuff. He also has 8 pounds of longshot...

Shipping would take all the value away, unless someone needed it really bad. If I was close and had the chance I would buy it all, with powder being like gold these days.
The 571 is not that common, but as you may know can be used in 44, 41, and 357 and probably other applications.
Long shot is also a great powder with many uses.

Magnum shotshell powders usually work for magnum handgun loads, don't they? I'm thinking Bluedot and IMR 4227.

Have never used it, but remember reading that it loads very much like Blue Dot. Should be best in larger capacity handgun cartridges. I’d think that there should be some HS-7 data readily available. Lots of recipes for HS-7 to be found in the Lyman cast bullet handbook. At least the older ones, like mine.

At $5 per pound you should buy all he will sell you. I would if it was offered to me and I don't need it. As stated above it can have lots of uses , especially the Longshot.

I don't have an exhaustive collection of reloading handbooks, but I do have a few, and some are 50+ years old. I find nothing in 357/41/44 mag loading data for HS-7. Lyman Shotshell Loading Handbooks shows a few HS-7 heavy field loads operating at less than 10,000 psi LUP, nowhere near the 30,000+ psi levels in hot handgun loads.

At that price You could use for canon powder. Start low and work up with 38 357-44-or 44 mag- 45 lc. I bought 5 pounds of unknown powder and started out with 5 grains in 45acp and it shot about as good as others. Almost any shotgun powder will work in pistol. Lots of HS-7 data still around. Blue Dot is close on volume looking at these charts. WIN 571 is probably 50 years old.

There's HS-7 data in Hodgdon #26 from .38 Special through .44 Magnum and maybe beyond that. Maybe one or two or a few loads per page, but quite a few pages. Just glancing, I saw no 9mm loads. Looks like best applications are for heavier bullets. Probably data in my other old manuals as well. Tell me specifically what you're looking for and I'll copy some loads.

If you have specific calibers and bullet weights in mind post them.
I used a bit back in the day for mag shot shell loads. Never handguns... My loading manuals are all packed away while I try to get a handle on all the reloading stuff. I used to pretty much use Hercules powders in the past for handguns so never really had much use for the ball powders in handgun. At present I don't load for 9mm so data isn't necessary for it. If 571 is about like BD use wise I could use it...BD doesn't throw very consistent charges so I could use it in 41 and 44. Might work well for 357 in my Win 94 long bbl rifle. Even though I have much 296/H110 I really don't use it in handgun loads cause I don't push the envelope. I already have Long shot and don't really use it either. Luckily I don't have a 40 or 10 mm to load for. I do use 2400 and 4227. He does have 2-4 lb Unique but wants 40 A pound for it...luckily I have enough or it. I talked to him again about the P W loaders and he has 2 pounds of Herco for reasonable price so gonna buy it. I use it in place of Unique. I use Unique in 20-28 ga.Thanks for the help guys

I found data for about all the magnums, plus 44 spl and 45 colt. On that basis alone, for 5 bucks if it were me I couldn't get to the seller fast enough.
On another topic......My gotos have always been Beye and Unq. But with high prices and dwindling supplies, when I had a chance to buy some HP-38 at a really good price, I did some checking and when I saw some good data I jumped on it and bought all I could get.
My research today was an eyeopener in another respect. That HP38 works everywhere, and is even preferred on some loads. So far I have only used it in 357 and 41, with real good results. That just may be my new goto.
But back to the thread, buy it!

I used a lot of it in my 38 and 357 magnum loads.
I used it like Alliant's Blue Dot and being a "Ball" type powder, it worked great
with the very heavy bullets, like the 158 grs, that fill the case in a hurry.
It was very accurate in my old M19-5 with a 158 Lwc but it did use a lot more powder
than my little bitty amount of Bullseye.
I ran out before I got into loading 9mm but It has to be a sleeper with a
124 and 147 gr. for getting a +P load, with lighter pressures.
I would be putting that powder across my chrony in a heart beat,
with heavy 9mm bullets.
If you buy it, I am sure that you will be happy, with it.
Here is a old picture that I found, but it is with a 148 gr 38 special loading.
This was my last target shot, after 200 or so rounds of 38 & 357
and I was getting tired, as you can see by shots #11 & 12.

In my older load books, HS-7 is shown for .357. Also in my Hodgdon pamflets. I called Hodgdon and asked about the discrepancys (hotter loads in the bullet makers books). Tech on the phone suggested the copper crusher method vs the electro-piezo transducer is why. I am sticking with the powder makers loads. 10g/158g lswc magnum primer.

Like said above, if you don't see data for W571 use HS-7 data, same powder.

Anything you can load with AA#7 can be loaded with W571/HS-7 too and very well. (different data of course) If I had access to it I would love to have 1 or both 8lb bottles! DO IT...

I guess I have been convinced. I'll give the fellow a call today and buy a keg of the 571...if he still has it. I want to look at the 2PW loaders he has. Don't need 'em but ??? I went out to my powder supply area yesterday...I did find a one pound container of HS 7...2 cans of Win 540(HS6) and a 3 lb 452. I remember using the 452 in 12 GA target loads and 540 was a good powder in 28 ga. I think I may have used HS7 in the 28 ga a bit...but it took a bit more powder than with 540. When Win dc'd 540 I went back to Unique. I also remember using 452 in some handgun loads but not what they were. I threw those records out years ago when I moved to Wyoming...holy cow...almost 20 years ago. If 571 will work in heavier 357,41,44 and 45 loads...I guess it would be worth buying it. My friend from MD called yesterday and let me know of a supplier who has primers at 70 dollars a1000 shipped free no HM if you buy 5000. So I may have a need for it...LOL. I have plenty brass and bullets for 357 41 and 44 special. He offered me a thousand pieces of 45 Colt brass too. I sent him a hundred 401 SLR brass last week. Time to start loading now. Snow is melting...finally
Forgot...does 571(HS7) require mag primers?..many ball types powder do. I do have a few SP mags and maybe a thousand LP Mags. Since I mostly used Hercules flake type powders I never bought many mag pistol primers. The old Win powder pamphlets never said. Course they recommended Win primers. CCI were my preferred
