A question on third generation frames?

More specifically the larger frame guns, the 1006s, 4506,s, 4566s, etc. I know that some of them have curved backstraps on the grips and some have straight backstraps. All of mine have the straight backstrap, which I prefer except my 645 which has a curved one.

My question is are the frames the same for both curved and straight back straps? In other words is it just the grips that are different, and thus interchangeable?

The frames are the same. I had both the curved and straight backstraps for my 10s and they interchanged, eventually sold off one with the curved backstrap since the straight backstrap fits my hand a lot better too.

Isn’t the mainspring housing/grip strap just part of the wrap around grips? It seems like you will get straight or arched (“curved”) back straps based simply on which grips you install.

I was hoping that this would be the case. I find the straight backstrap much more to my liking. Most of my third gens have it. I will have to see if I can get a set of straight backstrap grips for my 645. We will see.

Midway generally is an excellent source of Gen 3 stocks. So much so, I believe, folks will buy as many as they can, bump the price - sometimes as many as three times their cost - and sell them at auction. As such, it's not unusual to find Midway out of stock on the stocks/grips. Hang in there, however, because they aim to get 'em replenished ASAP.

The 10mm/45 ACP frames are the same on the 3rd gen pistols, with the exception of the compact pistols (shorter grip frame and shorter stocks). Curved mainspring housing on a Model 645 you say? I don't think I have ever seen such a thing.

Or so I was told. Perhaps the grips were changed out on it at some point. I got it very cheap for a little over three bills. I have subsequently set it up for .45 super. It is quite the blaster with the round that I load for it. I will post a picture of it. I have been a big fan of the third generation guns since I bought my first 4566 new when they first came out.
