Been spending some time making this a fully functioning field gun again. A nice restoration project that is almost complete...The gun is a 1830's English Percussion in 12 gauge.

What type of stain, if any, were used on the wood?
Is the finish TruOil? That wood is outstanding! Nice job.
Are you using blackpowder loads? Tell us more!

Thanks all....

Where to begin. Yes, it is restored for hunting partridge this fall. Both barrels are open, with no choke. That would be correct for it's period. The gun bears Birmingham proof marks.

65 grains of ffG with 1-1/8 oz of shot is the best patterning load in number 8's...

The finish is a concoction of my own. The would is burl bird-eye maple, that was all the rage from the 1820's to about the early 40's....

Excuse me for changing the subject for a minute. But are you the same guy who owns a Colt Fitz style 45 with taped grips? Seeing you gun on this forum many times (if it was you) made me want one. Then I found this for $600. Just thought I'd mention it. BTW. That shotgun is absolutly georgeous!

ps

I lurked through all your postings about your gun....

I like it! Well done!

Berns-Martin holster by any chance?

I have a friend with a great collection of English shotguns. I am pointing him this direction.

Great job on the restoration. Now how about that secret recipe?

Giz, that's the sawed off Colt allright. Funny how I find this particular gun so cool, and it ain't all shiney in the box, and it ain't even a S&W. BTW. I live out here in gold rush country. If I see any job offers for guys ridin' shotgun on stagecoaches I'll let you know . You can put that shotgun to good good use. Oh. That Berns-Martin was loaned to me by turnerriver. It's gone now.

Simple...

Grease is the secret part of the recipe. It is a particular brand that is hard to find these days. Product must come from the Elbow....LOL!

It's basically just a really good stock refinish and oiling routine. In the end I use Howards Furniture restoration as a final rub. It is a citris and lemon oil product that really brings the wood to life. The shotgun's stock changes color with the light intensity...

And Wyatt...

The reason I asked about that Berns-Martin rig was because they are seldom seen these days. Figures that turneriver would have one. He has some wonderful rigs...
