A scene from your neighborhood

My neighborhood...for now
Fox_Chase.jpg

The Blue Ox, Brings back memories. I remember some great dinners there. Some Weizen beer and schnitzel sounds pretty good right now. I believe it changed names last time i was there but the food was still good.

My girlfriend (eventually wife) and I are pretty much confined to the Philadelphia metropolitan area because of our jobs. When we retire we'll take our pensions, 401Ks, deferred comps, etc. and either move to South/central PA or go down South to complain about how these southerners don't know how to drive in the snow ;)

Finding affordable land around Philadelphia is like finding Rose O'Donnell at Weight Watchers.

This photograph brings a smile to my face. I know this intersection well. It is still a nice safe neighborhood (compared to where I live now).

There is a bus loop where the huge tree is, just behind the old bank building (now an American Legion Post) on the right.

And Reiker's market on the left was and perhaps still is an old fashion market. We (my ex-wife and in laws) had our weekly order delivered from there every Saturday. I lived just up the Pike in Rockledge. I can just make out on the right the steeple of the church where we were married in 1978.

Good memories of a happier time.

Thanks for posting the picture.

Reiker's is still in business and they still have the best meats around. The smoked pork chops are incredible and all of the wursts are excellent. The Danish Bakers right up the street are pretty darn good also.

I don't have pics of my area but this was taken last spring while walking my dog. This is a 5 min lazy walk from my house. However if you were to see my neighborhood you wouldn't think it was so country. My whole area is like this. 4 lane roads that are practically highways, shopping centers, lights, traffic, construction. ...etc....etc....but turn down a random side road and all of a sudden you're back in 1930

Here's the next best thing. A Google maps screen shot. This is on the other side of the pictures above.

You're near 2 great things....my favorite aunt's house and Tanner's! It's a shame how much they are building up in this area. If my uncle was still alive, he'd be very, very upset. My girlfriend and I were looking at farm houses and land in the area. Even with $300k it's next to impossible to get a house and 4-5 acres.

Yea there is now what looks like 2 or 3 developments being built simultaneously. Including a WAWA. I'm conflicted on it. On the one hand I like green and trees, what's left of them. But on the other hand my house was built less than 20 years ago.

No you won't find acres for $300 not in a long time. To give you an idea, when I was a senior in high school in 1998 my friend's parents bought a house an barn that sat on 10 acres and at the time that was $375k. Both buildings hadn't been lived in in 10 years. The house dated to the American Revolution and the barn was early 1600s. While the house was livable major renovations were needed including electric, heating and roof. Now, Newtown has been building up since before Warwick but it's the same general area and everything bleeds over. If I'm not mistaken that property is x worth over $3 million now

Sadly you are right. My girlfriend works in South Philly and right now I work in North Philly. We found a lot of options in Western Montgomery County, but the commute would be just shy of 100 miles round trip every day. I could eventually transfer somewhere closer to there, but she's pretty much stuck in South Philly for her job. We're waiting for the ride time and place to snag something closer in our price range. She has horses at her parents house in South Jersey, so we would need at least 4 acres.

Here are a few of the places I've lived.
Hyannis, Ma. Where I grew up. The harbor.

Outside Flagstaff, Az. Sunset Crater was my front yard, the San Francisco Peaks the back yard.

St. Augustine, Fl. The lighthouse was the view off my stern.

Just outside Annapolis, Md. My yacht is actually in this pic. On the corner as you turn left to go up the fairway into the marina. 1st slip inside the tee head, stern facing across the entrance, to the condos.

West Palm Beach, Fl. I was 4 slips in from the large green yacht.

Now, Cookeville, Tn. My house is just a few blocks past that tree. Right off the town square.
