Another solution for permanent knots is: Tie them the way you like and give the knot area a good coat of clear fingernail polish, maybe repeat a time or two.
On shoes with leather laces, I usually start with my own leather and have about 4 extra inches of lace to work with. A must on laces you tie every time you wear them!
