Iam just glad we are getting a crack at them . I would take that one in a minute.

My understanding is that the "collector grade" pieces will be going to auction. That was in one of their updates from CMP a bit ago.
So, generally speaking, a $1,000. will fetch a $1,000. 1911A1, which is what they somewhat promise.
My impression is that most of those put in storage were in decent condition, many arsenal reworks, and the junk was culled out years ago. Supposedly these were ready to be reissued if the need presented itself, so there should not be any real basket cases.
This is all what I have 'heard', so actual mileage may vary.

Last time I saw a thick park job like that it was on a refurbed French MAS 36. It makes the action and trigger really gritty until it gets worn down some.

This was posted on the 1911 forum.

A friend is the armorer for his police department. They recently received seven 1911s from the DoD.

Interesting. The pistol pictured is a classic example of what people refer to as a "Mixmaster" or a "Parts Gun".

It's a '44 Ithaca frame with a Remington Rand slide. Hard to tell what kind of barrel that is, though it may be a Colt barrel. And the checkered MSH definitely isn't original to the gun. Rearsenaled at Augusta Arsenal. Heavily reparkerized.

EDIT: Taking another look at all the photos of this pistol, especially those of the barrel, from the "M" and "P" stamps on the left side of the barrel lug, I'd say this pistol has a Colt match barrel in it. A not uncommon practice back then, although they were usually installed in Remington Rand pistols by early match shooters. FWIW.

But still...probably an excellent shooter and carry-in-the-car pistol. It'd easily sell for $1000 around here.

What I'm curious about (and I asked this question on that other forum) is why did that police department receive these pistols from the DoD? Did they request them, I wonder? And was it a purchase? I'll be interested if anyone over there answers.

According to several recent emails from the CMP that everyone was sent no 1911’s will be sold at Auction. They said ALL of them will be sold by mail through the random draw. None will be sold online (Auction) or in store. Below is #7 in the email they sent me-
7. No 1911s available in the CMP stores, or on line, only mail order sales.
So if your lucky and get in on the early part of the drawing you will be given a choice of a collector all the way down to a field grade, and priced accordingly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the collector grade sell in the $7000 range, as some recent auctions on GB have ended for NIB all original 1911a1’s. Each person can buy only one.
13. Customers will be contacted in the sequence provided by the Random Number Generator.
14. When the customer is contacted a list of 1911 grades and pricing options that are available will be offered for selection of one 1911 type pistol.
15. As CMP proceeds down the sequenced list less grades and pricing options will be available.

I've received every direct e-mail update from the CMP about the 1911s all the way back to December 2, 2015. There's been no mention of any pistol, "collector grade" or otherwise, going to auction.

As of the latest 1911 update dated January 29, 2018, there has been absolutely no mention of price by the CMP. None. The CMP hasn't promised or even hinted at pricing.

All this speculation about price, auctions, collector grade pistols, etc., etc. is coming from Internet gun blogs, websites, and wannabe "gun writers" who want the reader to believe they have the inside track on the latest info. Stuff like that is click-bait B.S., nothing more.

My understanding is you must be a member of a CMP Affiliated Club. The club actually being approved by CMP. I don't know what it entails now but back when it was the DCM it entailed quite a bit of paperwork, listing every member of the club by age categories. Filing a report every year of all scores fired by what members, the number of matches participated in by member. This was back when they furnished 30-06 ammo based on the number of members matches recorded, and you were to issue the ammo at the matches.

That has probably all changed by now, as I understand the CMP doesn't furnish any ammo, but will sell you ammo.

At the prices I’ve heard, unless it was one that had been issued to me at some point in time, I’ll pass.

This years 8000 will be gone in a week.

I'm going to have to join a legitimate shooting organization to qualify for one of these. Or can I just make something up?:)

The Smith & Wesson Collector’s Association qualifies. Not that you like S & Ws or anything like that. ;)
