A sweet pair of .41 Magnums - buy or pass?

Don't know where all of you are, but here in New England there are no pre-IL (2002) N-frames on any dealer's shelf for under a grand...and those under $800 don't last a week if they are in very good+ condition. It's been so long I can't tell you the last time I saw a 58 or 57 in a shop around here.

A 95% 58 with the original factory serial numbered grips will bring in the $800s on GunBroker and I just saw a LNIB one go for well over a grand just a week or two ago.

At $1500 for the pair one would not have lost any money but $2K was too much for guns with no boxes...

Georgia Arms has .41 mag from25$ for 50 to 35$ for 50, and discounts in larger quantities.

I reload for the .41, but when I need fresh brass I will order some ready rolled .41's and then I have once fired Starline brass.

Charlie B here again......

I didn't mean to set off any dispute over 41 Magnum either popularity or use and yes....both of those Smiths were sweet. Like alaskavett said above my use of "w/o" indeed meant white-outline on the Model 57 adjustable rear sight.

My only real deal was that I had $1,500 in hand but after talking with the gent, he just wasn't budging from his $2k asking price, which was the $1k each. Granted I was his first hit and he had just advertised yesterday morning so he has my number (but he doesn't have any idea of my price) so we will just wait it out and again...I would grab them if the price is right for me and I am not a "flipper" or even an "investor" outside of my 401K stock picks so I want them because they are old world S & W's.... and...yea....before arthritis gets any worse I really would like to touch off a few cylinders of 41 Magnum now that the Forum has mentioned where to get factory ammo.

My profound thanks to all Forum members and posters for all the S & W info on this site. I have never encompassed the depth of knowledge and friendliness experienced here. My only regret is that I didn't discover this site and join 10 or more years earlier than I did!

Thanks to all again for the reply's and if it wasn't already in use my signature would have been "Can't have enough N Frames".

Charlie B, we live for disputes over caliber, barrel length and finish. You are just adding fuel to another long awaited fire. The guys here are the best, the information and knowledge base is second to none, I too wish I joined a lot sooner.

I think the M58 may not be too far off. If he would let it go for $800, that would be fair to both parties IMHO. Even $900 may not be too steep, given that you can inspect it before purchasing, no shipping, handling, FFL fees, etc. But then, the M58 is really a unique S&W, being an N-Frame w/fixed sights, 4" barrel, and chambered for a cartridge that starts with 4. In 95%+ condition, I would seriously consider paying his price for it.

To me, the M57 would be just another six inch N-Frame with target sights. Since I would just as soon shoot .44 Mag or .357 Mag, no reason to bother with an M57 when M29s or M28s are more plentiful. Not trying to knock the .41 Mag, but I personally would not know it even exists if it weren't for the M58.

I have been seeing quite a few .41 mags showing up lately and I'm not really sure why. I am slightly interested but I just can't commit to a whole new caliber I don't load for.

I would wonder why the 57 has no adj. rear sight. Seems to me that would take a fairly serious bite out of his ask. Bargaining chip, anyway, a grand feels a mite high to me, too.

w/o= white outline. My first reaction was the same as yours.

Thanks all for the comments. In the end today, I did meet at a very public place in this small town, guy was nice enough but I did pass mostly because I do shoot the heck out of my own N frames (Model 25-2, Model 28-2, Model 29-2) and they look as good as they shoot (a heck of a lot better than me). The guys' guns were all of 95%, well cared for, but that price was over top end for me ( I had 15 Benjamins on board but did not make the offer) and I don't reload. I did check 2 of the big 3 LGS this afternoon, and like posted above....41 Magnum isn't stocked on the shelves.

So.....for me....the Model 57 and 58 go into that arena where the 22 Jet is......beautiful S & W's, but I would need a real steal on the price for me to add to my accumulation.
As others gave posted his asking is too high but $1,500 seems about right. For ammo Sportsmans Warehouse has a nice cowboy load, 210gr. @ 970fps running $32.99 for 50rds. Shoots well and isn't too expensive.

The 57s and 58s are both great shooters. If you have yet to try a .41 mag in either style you are missing a really nice experience. As an aside, these guns will continue to appreciate in value. They are really some of S&Ws finest revolvers.

58 first?

Well maybe offer to get the 58 first for 700 or 800.

Tell him you can't get both at the same time and that the 57 is more valuable/easier to sell for him but you like not to miss the 58.

Then if that works, he will hold the 57 for you and sees you are easy to deal with and will after a few weeks give you the first refusal on the 57...

Some strategy maybe...

If he is again firm at 1000 for the 58, he does not know the market and needs more simmering with out getting any nibbles.

Model 58s are very rare in my part of Illinois so, I'd buy them both. Sounds like a fair deal for both seller and buyer?

What do......

Since ammo is easily ordered on line the old caveat about that being a strike against the .41 Magnum is not really operative. And, besides... it's a perfect reason to take up handloading. :D

If you don't want the guns, that's ok - but I wouldn't let the ammo thing slow me down. "Problems are made to be solved." :)

What do WE care about the words 'obsolete' and 'scarce ammo'???:):):)

So, you guys are right, the price is the only issue. Which is a pretty big issue. Tell the guy to call you in about a year if he hasn't sold them.

PS I'm not a collector but 'rare' is about as meaningless as the other two terms when it comes to making a deal.

You are kidding, right? I'll admit S&W couldn't give these(58s) away while making them but, have you checked what others are selling the 58s today's world? If it were me, I'd be offended by an offer of $750 and would be a good reason to call off the whole deal.
My $.02, Steve

KEY WORDS: FTF IN VIRGINIA.

On a national web site I think he'd get his asking EVENTUALLY. A blue collar guy would go with a lower priced & different caliber. If you are not hot to trot about them, let him simmer as mentioned & hope he doesn't find a Daddy war bucks with a S&W fetish.
