Everybody and his brother are buying guns, but how many of them are becoming regular shooters that burn through ammo at any rate? Unless there are a lot of new shooters, it would seem ammo supplies would stabilize in time. I'm sure that a lot of new shooters are popping away, but will it last much longer.

I believe if the powers that be start a real anti gun agenda, however, people will buy just because they are afraid they won't be able to at some point.

As long as they leave their brass... ;)

IMO this shortage is far from over. Post Newtown it took 2-ish years to get back to "normal."

It's looking like a couple of rabid anti gunners are going to have free reign for at least 4 years.

The only reason I stray from my two favorite LGS's is availability of what I want at the time. These two gun shops make their money on guns and ammo, almost exclusively. The problem with parts and accessories, which has been relayed to me by each proprietor, is that you can stock as much as you want, but somebody will always want something a little different. The Interweb opens the entire accessories and parts warehouse to the world, but guns are best bought in person.

Both of my LGS's have lately survived in the world of "You get what you get when you get it" from their distributors by benefiting from widows bringing in the late hubby's gun collection. Picked up several nice S&W revolvers from various estate deliveries.

I support the one in my home town to the extent that I now rent a corner of the shop as my office space. Don't need much, just a spot to put a landline phone and a file cabinet, and he and I have been friends for the 35 years I've lived in this particular corner of flyover country.

Happy New Year to all!

Now more than ever this is the time to support your LGS. There has never been much of a profit in guns and ammo. Parts and accessories is where the money is.

When this is over there will be many slightly used or unfired guns for sale.

Very cool, Muss! Neat place to have an office!

My biggest problem with new gun buyers is the fact that the vast majority of them clearly had no intention whatsoever of actually getting involved with upholding the Second Amendment which allowed them to purchase firearms in the first place.
So guns and ammo are sold out everywhere, yet we have a no shortage of politicians who got voted into office who openly expressed their intentions to push for Gun Control laws including the reinstatement of the Assault Weapons Ban. You'd think that these people would actually like to keep their guns, but apparently they don't.

So yeah, to heck with new gun owners because all they did was create a shortage for nothing by going out and buying guns/ammo that they evidently have no problem with turning in at a later date.

Guessing here but I doubt many of these "new or first time" buyers are serious firearm/shooting enthusiasts. Based on that guess I think we may see more ammo available mid 2021. Again just my humble opinion. I personally have enough on hand to shoot as I wish.

He was getting kicked out of space he'd been in for 40 years, and he couldn't really afford the new spot. Space is limited in the area he wanted to stay in, and it's a small town. I had a small stand alone downtown in a good location, but I saved a little money and we share a lighted sign on the main drag. Like I said, I use about 100 square feet in the area where his office space is. It was a win for both of us.

We don't have mutual customers . . .

States will take gun/ammo restrictions as far as their voters will allow them. Live in a Blue state, expect it. Live in a Red state, unlikely to happen. And with a 6 to 3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court, there will be no new federal gun restriction laws being passed.
And regarding ammo, per the owner of the LGS first time gun buyers tend to go home with a few box's. It's the older shop regulars who purchase the majority of the availble ammo.

You're VASTLY overconfident.

The anti-gun cult thinks it has a BIG opening to act, and they're not going to let miniscule things like the law and the Constitution stop them. And if you resist them, they're MORE than willing to use force, including deadly force, to impose their will on you.

VERY bad times are on their way.

That's what we thought about Harleys when the outlaw accountant RUBs were buyin' 'em up in the '90s.

Based on that guess I think we may see more ammo available mid 2021.

I really hope you are right but I would bet $100 otherwise.

This is a load of unsubstantiated dung. COULD it be true on a tiny or larger scale? Possibly, and you have no proof whatsoever, so you've just blanketed a massive group with no call to do so.

MEANWHILE...

We have 30-40-50-60-70 years of a country fat with FUDDS who fit exactly the profile you just laid out that haven't done jack squat and *ARE* guilty of all the venom you just directed at new gun buyers.

The 'new gun owners' who have no interest in upholding the 2nd Amendment are one thing, and I couldn't care any less about them...but the young people who do support gun rights and are just becoming of age to purchase firearms and ammo are getting the worst of the deal. They're generally in a lower income bracket, and they can barely afford to protect themselves. They do deserve some sympathy, and they do need our support.

I, for one, welcome EVERY new shooter. We need them.

I'd argue that Fudds are the enemy in the ranks. There are a number on this very forum - their posts are easy to find. As long as they get to keep their firearms, they have no problem sitting by and watching everyone else get the firearms they don't like or stuff that is currently legal they don't approve of, get restricted. No problem. I'd be willing to bet that they'd be among the first to turn in their firearms without a fight to show that they are most law abiding citizens ever.

Obviously anyone who actually supports/stands by the 2nd Amendment is fine with me, and I most certainly do sympathize with those who lack the funds to afford weapons to purchase a firearm for self-defense.

I'm merely aggravated by the fact that even after such an unprecedented influx of new firearms owners, politicians got voted into office who openly made Gun Control a big part of their campaign, especially while hypocritically turning a blind eye to widespread violence going on in the background. So many of these new gunbuyers that everyone assumed and continues to assume were good for the 2nd Amendment basically turned out to be a bunch of freeloaders who exercised their constitutional rights to own a firearm, yet made absolutely no attempt whatsoever to uphold their rights by voting for anti-gun politicians.

Unfortunately, the average panic-buyer seems to have bought a firearm then proceeded to take it completely for granted by failing to be more responsible regarding which political candidates they voted for in order to uphold their rights to keep the firearms they bought.
Then again, it was foolish to expect commitment from folks who only bought firearms in the first place because they were scared. It's extremely likely that once things have calmed down, we'll see a huge influx of Like New firearms on the used market, courtesy of the panic-buyers.
