Well we have a bunch of these little suckers this year. Anybody got any good ideas for prevention or application of something to keep these things away?

The dogs are treated with Advantix but I still pick off a couple after they have been outside sometimes. Any yard spray that will diminish this little pest? Not interested in gettin chickens or guineas.

We have Orkin come out every month and spray the place. It includes ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, etc.

We also put one of the medicines on the dogs necks.

They bring in a tick every once in a while but they don't live long enough to dig in.

Ticks are in great supply this year...........as are GNATS......

If you are looking for something for personal use try these:

Sawyer® Products - Water Filtration, Insect Repellent, Sunscreens and More

Amazon.com: DurationTM Permethrin 10% Concentrate@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/116fKps-i9L.@@AMEPARAM@@116fKps-i9L

The second one you mix yourself & is cheaper in the long run. I have used both product for several years now while spring turkey hunting & mushroom hunting and have not had any ticks on me. My buddy hunting with me finds several each time we are out.

Do not spray permethrin directly on your skin as a repellent. You body metabolizes it in about 20 -30 minutes or at least that is what I've read somewhere.

If you have cats, be very carefull using permethrin....it is very toxic to them.

Sawyer Permethrin works very well. I spend summers on a wildlife refuge and spray my jeans and socks before leaving home. It lasts through several washings. I can't remember the last time I had a tick.

Garlic will stop most critters. I eat lots of garlic.

My wife gets the tic stuff from the vet they fall off dead on my dog and cats. There is a newer stuff for dogs only but you can't have any cats.

The guinea hens eat tics.

Cold winters and lots of rain seems to kill tics more outdoors. My dog and cats seem to have no tics on them this year. We only have tics in the spring and fall. In the hot weather there gone.

The Sawyer stuff works. Spray it on your clothes and it lasts for six washings. Cabelas has it. I just sprayed three pairs of hunting pants, shirts and socks. Headed to Africa in four weeks.

I just picked one off of my chest this AM . I was out in my "Wee Wood" yesterday , so he had all night to get his hooks into me, but with a good sharp tweezer I was able to get him head and all . It only left a small mark and surprisingly no blood.
Also was absolutely painless.

I put a Preventick collar on my fur child, it works very good. Cost about $22. at the vets office but worth it, last approximately 6 months. When
I do find ticks on her, they are usually dried up like a raisin and dead.

We have deer ticks all over the place here. Little teeny tiny buggers. Much smaller than a regular tick. Not much bigger than the head of a pin. These are the ones that carry lyme disease which can be VERY dangerous. I know several people who have had it and got REAL sick. Lyme disease can mimmick lots of other diseases and can be hard to diagnose.

I've pulled 2 of them off me in the past few months and they left the tell tale 'target' red spot on me which says they had lyme and now I have it. If you see the red target around the bite spot, get the proper antibiotic within 72 hours, you'll be good to go....I was.

Be real careful with those tick bites. When I went to the Dr both times, he says stay away from trees and grass. Yeah right, I live in the middle of some pretty deep woods and can't leave my house with out crossing several acres of trees.

Be careful out there guys. There's lotsa stuff out there trying to kill you!

The BBT is suppose to bring me some Sawyer Permethrin on Friday!

Rangerpat...I had to read your post twice...I read it as 'YOU' put on the collar! LOL

Now to conquer the yard!

I've had good results wearing khaki pants and white shirts (to see and remove ticks before they dig in), spraying pants and shoes with bug spray with DEET, and dusting low pants legs and shoes with flowers of sulphur powder.

Helps a lot against ticks and chiggers.

(Sorry for the english but trying) My wife got TBE from a tick about 2 years ago. I thought she gonna die, got realy sick and ended up in hospital for 2 weeks. She lost her talk and her brain almost got fried from fever. Now 2 years later she still have some side effekts from the TBE that only we as a family can notis (minor memory things, she had a verry god memory befor, now ordinary as the rest of us) and that makes her cry at night some times when she thinks i dont hear it. She aint the same as before and thats hurts in her heart some times when she is tierd from long shifts as a emergency nurse. Its realy was a nasty thing and im lucky to still have my wife by my side. Take the vaccination, i did after this.

Take whatever precautions necessary! I got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever two summers ago from a tick bite that I never knew that I got. 6 weeks in the bed, most with chills and fever and thousands of dollars in my medical bills! Everyone who gets it and progresses to the hemolytic phase DIES! My clotting factors were falling when they finally made the diagnosis! It is more common in the Southeastern United States than the Rocky Mountain States. THERE IS NO SUMMER FLU WITH CHILLS AND FEVER IN SE US!

I was diagnosed with Lyme a couple weeks ago. I had been sick for a couple months and the docs couldn't figure it out. It started out like flu that came and went. The cause was a mystery until a small bullseye mark appeared on my arm. Many people never have the mark(s) or have delayed reactions as I did. All I can say is...YOU DON"T WANT THIS! Its been one of the worst illnesses I have had and I have had more than my share...So, don't take tick exposure lightly. I used to think nothing of it...Now, I may just wear a biohazzard suit if I have to go where any ticks reside...I know someone who has Lyme that has gone into the chronic type and its awful...

I had to Google TBE--"tick-borne encephalitis," which is scary stuff. "Brain-frying" is a real possibility. My father's sister got Saint Louis encephalitis (carried by mosquitoes) in 1933 and, after a very high fever for many days, came home from the hospital as a 15-year-old with the mind of a newborn baby. She died in her 80s, never having progressed mentally much past the level of a three-year-old. If ticks can carry these viruses into you and there's a vaccine available...get the shot.

No need to apologize, MrSwede. Your English is easily understood and is approximately five thousand times better than my Swedish. :)

What part of VA are you in? Did your exposure came from woods or around the home? Hope you get better.
