We were forced to get 5G phones about a year ago by our carrier (AT&T). They provided free cheapo smartphones, but we preferred our Samsungs, and bought slightly newer models that were 5G friendly from a big box for roughly 70% of the AT&T price.

We had very poor reception, dropped calls, etc., in the house. Since we live in the rural mountains and have always needed a cellphone booster, we figured to just live with it.

Last week our cellphone booster started flashing a red light, then died forever. While looking for a direct replacement, I immediately found that, "...stupid is as stupid does." Boosters must be built for 5G just as the phones must be! Just installed a big box booster a few minutes ago and have 5 bars cell service all over the house, yard, and driveway.

I'm feeling really, really old. :(

We had the same forced upgrade requirement from AT&T's Cricket branch. Living on the far side of a hill from the nearest mountaintop cell tower always meant poor reception at home.
Used the upgrade as the opportunity to avail ourselves of their included WiFi Calling service, which required using specific handsets.
Bingo. Not only is there flawless mobile reception at home now using wired Spectrum internet, but I can make in-network calls from anywhere in the world that I can jump on WiFi.

I've never forgiven the cell companies for making my Nokia 1100 obsolete.

When do we reach the point where faster really doesn’t matter that much?

When we have smashed the knuckles of every coder who writes pop-ups, self-starting media files, and ads, then we can relax and get by with 20 Mb/s of so. That assumes one user streaming a film at HD quality. If you have a bunch of people doing different films and gaming, you need a bunch more speed.
