? about buying a used model 10

I'm starting to have second thoughts about the used Model 10...thinking I might just get a new 637. I can get it for $325 minus the 30 dollar rebate from S&W.

Thoughts?
That would be apples to oranges. But it sounds like quite a deal, if that's what you want.

BTW, I bought a couple from SOSS. Some definite wear, but great triggers and accurate. Of course, I did have to buy sight unseen and take my chances. But I haven't heard of any one getting a junker from SOSS. I would trust them over Bud's personally. For $230, it was a great deal, IMHO.

Funny, I'd have second thoughts about the 637 myself.....and much rather have the M10. The M10's are/ were workhorses. Properly cared for, they last and last. I've seen several ex- Aussie police 10's (one of my best friends bought one from Bud's and I checked it over for him before he accepted it at the FFL)....and getting past the holster wear, all have been just fine. I have a 3" HB Mod 10-8 myself, which is an ex-police gun too (but I don't know from where)....that had the usual holster wear, but it was/is mechanically perfect. Most accurate handgun I own.....and my favorite, too.

For a new gun owner, I can understand the exterior wear being a bit of a put off, but don't let that colour your view as regards the mechanical condition. In most cases, the two have NOTHING to do with each other. As has become a cliche.....most police guns are handled a lot, but shot very little.

Any Model 10 is "+P rated". Quote.

Jack you are right of course. I have md 10s in 2",3" and 4" as well as
several pre 10s with one about 100 yrs old judging from the serial #.
I would not hesitate to buy a used gun with minor issues if the price
was right and I have a 4 screw apart right now for cleaning as it may
be the most neglected revolver I have ever come across but boy was it
a bargain! The OP's uncertainty seemed to be an answer to his own
question however as some buyers aren't looking for a project.

I would just leave them as is......these are ex-duty guns, not safe queens and any attempt to reblue them, either professional or "do it yourself" will still leave them with that "polished and reblued" look that I personally don't like.

I'll take a 0% blue Model 10 any day over one that's been reblued, but that's just me.

FYI I bought an Australian PD trade in 66-7 and it's one of my favorite guns. The PD armorers were even nice enough to de-activate the IL's on these guns:)

Depends on how much you're going to shoot it, how good of a shot you are and whether 'new' is important.

The 637 is, to me, not a 'fun' gun to shoot. None of the airweights are to me. The grip only allows two fingers and the 2" barrel requires a lot of practice.

On the other hand, you cannot go wrong with a model 10. It's a real workhorse - as others have said. I have an Aussie 3", a 4" HB SB 4", and a tapered barrel 4". I can hit within the 9 ring with any of them at 75' - all day long.
