I'll be heading for the LGS after work today to check out the 686 SSR I've seen and handled there and unless I find something wrong with it, I paln to take it home with me. I'm familiar with the recommended check out steps, but would welcome any other suggestions.
I'm buying it to cover several uses. Service class in a local indoor PPC league, possibly IDPA SSR class if I find the time and place to try it next year, to keep handy for HD and finally because I just plain like it and it's not often that I have the funds for a gun in that price range.
I'd welcome any comments, suggestions, etc.

If you are interested in a new 686 SSR, I have a new one along with all the items from S&W. I purchased new In Jan. 2010 and the gun has never been fired. I have it listed here in Firearms 4 sale forum and I'm asking $700.00 for it. This should be around $30/$60 less then I've seen them priced at. Just thought you might want to know.

A great choice for what you have described! Get one and have a blast....
Be sure to buy a good quality holster that covers the trigger guard if you are using it in IDPA/USPSA?ICORE etc. Along with that, get a number of speed loaders and pouches, and a good sturdy belt and go have FUN!

It's a very nice gun and I'm confident you'll like it a lot. I had one and sold it only because I had too many .357s for my purposes and because it sort of overlapped the others that I had.

Thanks for the offer, but the LBS gave me a killer deal and I took it. So far I like everything about it, though it needs some dry firing and range use to get it broken in. It's pretty tight right now. At some point after I've got enough practice rounds through it I'll start smoothing out the action and tweaking it to my liking.
MY next project will be to find a holster suitable for Indoor PPC service class and IDPA stock service class. I'm open to any and all suggestions, but it needs to be a left handed one, so that will probably limit my choices somewhat. DOes anyone know if the Safariland 333 speedloader holders are legal for IDPA?

I would suggest that you go to the IDPA website and read allof the regulations regarding holster selection, speedloaders and pouches before you start looking for a holster. One thing for sure is that the trigger guard must be covered. I frequently use my Kramer on the belt holster for my revolvers. Check kramerleather.com and see what you think. Am sure Greg would make a lefty for you.
If I am not using my Kramer holster, then I oft times will use my DeSantis that has a thumb strap that I don't like to use. IDPA/USPSA rules are such that if the holster is equipped with a thumb strap it MUST be used.
Also be sure to use a solid and sturdy belt. If you can fold it in half while holding it vertically it is not sturdy enough.
Hope that in some manner helps you out.
Randy
