Hi! I am looking forward to join our local IDPA competition for the first time & will be using my S&W 627 5" 8shots. What parts should i modify? i was told that i could make the trigger lighter(replace trigger or cut off the spring - i am not sure). Replace barrel maybe? This is the first time i may be joining any shooting competition. Any insights would be great!

Here you need one of these to shoot IDPA 686SSR

The local club may let you compete (local matches) with your 5" 8 shooter, but IDPA rules limit us to a 4" barrel and loading only six rounds. I'm not sure about the weight.

To load to capacity and use all 5 inches, look for an ICORE match.

Otherwise, you have a nice pistol. The 5" N frame .357 S&W Magnum was a big favorite for carry with a lot of folks back in the day. I'd think it will still work. I'd practice dry fire and loading.

I hate to tell you, but your gun is not legal in IDPA.

Oh no! i just joined an IDPA session training and no one told me this but thanks for the info anyway.

Revolver king, i cant seem to see the image attached. Can you re-attach it again?

You can also use it in USPSA/IPSC, you can load all 8 but you can only fire 6. Otherwise you move into open class with the scoped/Comped/24rd/.38Super guns.

Or you can shoot it in USPSA production division.

You need to read the rule book.

What about Steel Plate Challenge? We have an open interpretation at the range where I shoot that only distinguishes between revolvers and bottom-feeders, with centerfire & rimfire groups - shoot-offs have no distinction. You could be shooting a 625 in .45 ACP against a 9mm race gun with 20+ rounds.

I shot SPC with a 625 for years - got flustered in competition and got a 5" h-l 686+ for 7-shots - helped - but my JM 5" PC627 V-Comp was better - except for the black/black sights. My 627 Pro - a 4"-er with the Classic-DX style spring loaded front sight - is best. Like that 625, it sports a HiViz front for quick acquisition, but gives you 3 extra rounds/stage (You don't want to miss - but having to reload is a killer.). Actually, I prefer my competition... me against me. Oddly, my five .44 Russians (240gr LSWC @ 692 fps - makes 'major' pf!) from my 696 yield faster times in practice - you can't miss, of course.
