Is it possible for a cartridge to discharge while it is being loaded into a chamber from speed loader? This supposedly happened to a friend of mine's brother in-law.....Not sure of the brand of speed loader or whether it was factory ammo or a reload, could have been either. My first reaction...No way. Nothing in a speed loader touches a primer. (This did not happen on April 1)

Impossible! This is even beyond the capabilities of an idiot brother-in-law to accomplish.

Old loads where gun power went nitro perhaps......but it would not have been the speed loaders fault, operator error. Sounds like urban myth to me.

I would tend to agree. I have both HKS and Safariland speed loaders. No way..but then maybe with some bad reloads *almost* anything is possible. If indeed this a late April Fools thing, I am going to kick somebody's butt or at least rub some gunpowder on it.

Well, I suppose if there was something under the flap on a medium, or small frame speedloader. Doesn't matter whether is HKS, or Safariland, it would still have to be stuck with some sort of terrible force.

Two, the speedloader just catches on the rim of the cartridge, so, you would about never get it to even lock the cartridge in the loader, if something was lodged under the flap, on the back of the loader. N frame loaders are open in the back, in HKS.

The very first speedloaders I ever had were a set of old Hunt Manufacturing, rubber ones. They enclosed the whole rim, like a Bianchi speedstrip, but were round. I suppose you could jam something in there, and then hammer it hard enough to make it go boom.

This would have to be Murphy's Law at its finest. I learned long time ago never to say something is impossible. But I will say, "Not Bloody Likely"!!!!!!

Sounds more then not likly to me and lets see it happened on April first so is there a joke in there somewhere ????

Ask your friends BIL if it was a 12 point or a 14 point buck that just happened to be standing in the wrong place and dropped dead when he shot it when he was loading his revolver with defective ammunition in a defective speedloader when he accidently had an accidental discharge when this happened. :D:D:D Hey it COULD happen.

show me his bloody stump

Show me his bloody stump to verify or at least shredded parts of something.

The only possible way that could happen and you would have better luck winning the lottery is using a very dirty Dade speed loader. Back 25 years ago an MDPD officer in a PPC match had dirt stuck inside the speed loader. Loading the cylinder caused dirt to hit the primer causing a discharge.

Luckly no one was hurt.

Only possible scenario I can think of would be a slightly high primer
then the round ,being in the cylinder was slammed shut against the recoil shield igniting the round.

May I have my cigar now?

Maybe. I do know that my friend did some reloading for his brother-in-law. I also know that he sometimes loads up some pretty hot .357 mags. I also know that sometimes those well seated primers really aren't.

Know how about a dirty chamber combined with a hot load and a high primer?

I still plan to check out the BS factor a bit more.

Double-based smokeless powder is composed of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin, but it's pretty unlikely that the nitroglycerin would separate out, even under poor storage conditions. There have been some instances of detonation with reduced loads of certain powders, but I think the reason for this is not yet clear.

The odds are lower then me scoring with Megan Fox.......

I also saw a pic of a bullet found on a Civil War battlefield, where a Minie bullet and a round ball hit in mid air and melted together, one bullet from the USA and one from the CSA.......I say the odds are about the same.
