just acquired a very nice 5" nickel 27-2 that has a little bit of red paint on the front sight. I am used to using acetone for removing this on blued guns but not nickel. Will acetone damage the finish?

I've used nail polish remover (acetone) to remove front sight paint on my nickel Smiths without harm to the nickel.

acetone fine for nickle

I just posted the other day about acetone removing white paint in lettering and roll stamps. The pics are of my Model 36-1, 3" and it had bright red on the front sight.

I removed it with acetone, very easy, no harm at all to the finish.

Definitely remove grips, use cotton swab, dab the acetone on and soak the paint for 5 minutes or so, if stubborn, scrub with old nylon toothbrush, wipe down, clean as normal, oil or wax if you like and done.

Use in ventilated area and for sure don't do it on a plastic or Formica countertop...I do it on my wood workbench in garage.

. . . and your nose and skin!

I have had several "blue light" treatments on my face to treat Sun damage, pre skin cancer spots. The first part is they clean the skin on your face with acetone on cotton balls. It removes all the oils, etc prior to the application of the reactive cream and then under the uv light for about 12 minutes. Your face feels like it is on fire afterwards.then have to stay inside for3 days.

Use your sunscreen so you don't have to go through this when you get old! Not fun. If acetone won't hurt your skin it shouldn't hurt nickel.

I would assume you are using medical or surgical grade acetone on your face. I don't know the difference in the compounds sold under the name but the commercial stuff has been outlawed in a lot of industries as cancer causing.

The dermatologist uses it so I assume it some type of medical grade? The first time they did it i asked what it was as I couldn't hardly breathe and the nurse said acetone.

I typically use a little acetone on a paper towel to clean my fingertip after applying Tru-Oil.
